Dear Friends and Supporters,
During the first week of June, the UN ESCAP Road Safety Week was hosted in Bangkok. The
AIP Foundation Senior Leadership team headed by Greig Craft, were
delighted to attend and participate along with international partners.
The Road Safety Week brought together policymakers, technical experts,
and road safety advocates from across Asia, Europe, and beyond.
Organized
by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the
Pacific and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the
event aimed to strengthen global cooperation toward achieving
Sustainable Development Goal targets 3.6 and 11.2a—focused on halving
road traffic deaths and ensuring access to safe, affordable, and
sustainable transport systems by 2030.
Speakers from AIP Foundation Thailand and Vietnam, the Royal
Automobile Association of Thailand (RAAT), and the Automobile
Association of Vietnam (AA Vietnam) were invited to attend a formal
meeting of the Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety, which explored
updates to international legal instruments and shared global best
practices.
During
the Road Safety Week in Bangkok, Ratana H. Winther, Chairperson for AIP
Foundation Thailand shared about the success of the ‘Safeguard’ project
supported by the FIA Foundation, which aims to improve motorcycle
helmet use among riders and passengers in Thailand, including children
and vulnerable road users.
Thai
motorcycle helmet safety continued being the focus at an FIA
Foundation-hosted High-Level meeting with Thai parliamentarians.
The delegation, on a Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport
Safety (PACTS) study tour in London, was led by H.E. Mr. Pichet
Chuamuanphan, First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In
Vietnam, in partnership with the World Bank’s Global Road Safety
Facility and Grab Vietnam, a leading superapp in Southeast Asia, we
began implementing a comprehensive motorcycle safety program to improve
awareness and adopt best practices in safe behavior. This program
contributes to the World Bank’s ‘Innovative Approaches to Improve the
Safety of Motorcyclists’ Initiative.
The safety sessions as part of the program, which took place in Vinh Phuc (near Hanoi) and Ho Chi Minh City, aimed
to enhance the safety of motorcycle drivers within the ride-hailing
industry through the development and delivery of a targeted safety
curriculum.
The
program overall follows a structured approach, incorporating both
theoretical and practical components designed to improve driver safety,
reduce traffic crashes, and promote safe riding practices.
As we pave the way forward together, I invite you to please read on about our highlights from June.
Sincerely,
