Message for World Day of Remembrance WDOR 2010

“Remembering lives lost and broken”
“Don’t forget the injured”

As every year on the third Sunday of November, we remember victims of road traffic crashes:
This day is an important opportunity for victim associations, most of them set up by victims themselves, to highlight the problems they have to face after a road trauma. Road crashes always happen without being prepared and they change lives so suddenly, from one moment to the next.
We should include in our thoughts not only those who lost their lives, but insist that this remembrance day is also dedicated to those victims who survived with severe injuries. We include all the friends and families.

We thank all those people, working for rescue services, for the police and in hospitals who share day by day the cruel reality of road crashes. No picture, no words can really tell how painful these situations are.

But on World Day of Remembrance we should not fail to call on the responsibility of decision makers to make roads less dangerous: they should implement the well known measures that can reduce fatalities and severe injuries in a short, medium or even longer term.

Every year, since the UN has declared officially this Remembrance Day, the number of events and ceremonies of remembrance in the whole world is growing. This worldwide solidarity empowers us to demand better support for road victims, so we don’t feel abandoned.

Equally, we continue to campaign for a reduction in the danger on the roads during the next decade and therefore, we hope, a reduction in the number of broken lives - in our countries, throughout Europe and in the whole world.

Many thanks to all of you and a special thank-you to Brigitte Chaudhry, RoadPeace founder and president, who worked so hard for 7 years as FEVR president to get World Day of Remembrance to the top of the agenda.

Jeannot MERSCH,
FEVR president
