"Dangerous by Design 2014" highlights that
over 47,000 people were killed while walking in the US from 2003 to
2012. The report ranks major American cities according to a Pedestrian
Danger Index. It notes that the majority of deaths could be prevented
with safer street design: providing sidewalks, installing
high-visibility crosswalks & refuge islands, and calming traffic
