Ireland: Minister for Transport considering stricter road traffic legislation

The Irish Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, is considering the introduction of harsher penalties for drink-driving, citing statistics indicating that there were 187 deaths in road traffic crashes in Ireland last year, compared with 162 crash fatalities in 2015.
Mr Ross said that while the new 'Road Traffic Bill' has started to reduce fatalities, "if drunk-driving continues, we will have to look at dramatic ways to tackle it".
He also noted that drink-driving is mainly an issue for younger male drivers. Ross told reporters that he is considering reducing the legal BAC limit from 0.5 mg/ml to 0.2 mg/ml, which is the level for professional and novice drivers.
