HAPPY NEW YEAR: 2017 ROUNDUP
From UN Global Road Safety Week and World Day of Remembrance for Road
Traffic Victims to the Fifth Global Meeting, the publication of Walking the Talk and
welcoming our 200th member, 2017 has been an important year for the
Alliance. It has also been a significant year for our members, which
included legislation successes in Tunisia and the Philippines and
promising signs for several other members’ campaigns. Read a round up of
key Alliance and member milestones HERE. Read what is in store for the Alliance in 2018 HERE.
We congratulate all our members on their hard work in 2017 and wish
everyone a happy New Year. We look forward to working together in 2018
in our continued challenge to save lives and move toward the Sustainable
Development Goals.

The Alliance was honored to receive a Prince Michael International Road

global road safety world, and the Alliance is extremely proud to be one
of this year’s recipients.
We would also like to congratulate all fellow winners, especially the
five Alliance members: ArriveSAFE, the Automobile Club of Moldova (ACM),
Safe Way Right Way, Safe Kids Malaysia, and founding Alliance member

Last week, the Alliance published its bylaws in French and Spanish. The
bylaws define, among other things, the Alliance’s objectives, how it is
governed, membership criteria, and members’ rights. The bylaws therefore
form the Alliance's most significant document. Translating the bylaws
recognizes that we are a global community and makes this key document
more accessible to members.
The Alliance would especially like to thank Koffi Nuseto Aladji-Weka of
Alliance member ONG AVA Togo for translating the French version.
Read the bylaws in English, French, and Spanish HERE.

In October, Alliance Advocate Daniel Mwamba, Zambian Road Safety Trust
(ZRST), was introduced to WHO's new Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus, at the WHO Global Conference on Noncommunicable Diseases
(NCDs) in Montevideo, Uruguay. They discussed the need for coordinated
alliances to address NCDs in Africa. Daniel has converted this
conversation into action: with the approval of the government and WHO's
country representative, he is spearheading an alliance to bring together
organizations working across different NCDs in Zambia. Read more HERE.
Daniel is one of the cohort of 2016 Alliance Advocates and attributes
his power mapping and presentation skills to the training. Applications
for the 2018 African Alliance Advocate training are now open. Apply HERE.

“HEROES DRIVE IN PAJAMAS”
In Slovenia, Alliance member Zavod VOZIM's intriguingly titled new
campaign “Heroes drive in pajamas,” addresses the problem of drunk
driving among young people in Slovenia. Its message: “It's easier to get
over your mom in her pajamas in front of the club, than to get over a
drunk driving accident. Make sure you get home safely.”
To reinforce the message, volunteers put on pajamas and gave free car
rides home to young party-goers in three Slovenian towns where bus and
taxi services are non-existent and alcohol and drug crash rates for
young people are especially high. The event was part of a wider campaign
addressing drunk driving legislation and enforcement at a national
level and awareness among young people. The project is spearheaded at
Zavod VOZIM by 2017 Alliance Advocate David Razboršek. Read more HERE.
