News: Drink-driving statistics
This month saw the release of final figures
on drink-drive crashes in Great Britain for 2016.

Shockingly, the number of people killed or seriously injured in drink-drive crashes has reached the highest levels since 2012 showing that it is an increasing menace on our roads! Brake issued a press release in response to the figures, demanding the Government adopts a zero tolerance approach to make it clear to drivers that not a drop of alcohol is safe.

Policy: Vision Zero
Last month, the Mayor of London and Transport for London (TfL) launched their Vision Zero action plan. Brake very much welcomes TfL’s Vision Zero strategy and its initial focus on reducing speed limits across London to 20mph.

Brake’s campaigns team has been working with TfL on the messaging of the campaign – a clear indicator of the respect for Brake as a leading voice on road safety. What we need to see now, however, is the nationwide adoption of Vision Zero, something which Brake will continue to push for.

Community engagement

Event: Road Safety Week 2018
19–25 November 2018

Bike Smart is the message at the heart of
this year’s Road Safety Week. Those on
two wheels are among the most vulnerable road users in the UK: more than a third of people killed or seriously injured on UK roads are bicycle or motorcycle riders. Brake’s week-long campaign will raise awareness about the importance of implementing a safe systems approach, mandating life-saving technology and prioritising cycle-friendly infrastructure, as well as promoting safe driving and riding behaviours. Registered events will be recorded on our interactive map.

Calling all bloggers: We are looking for bloggers to write about their local road safety week events. If you’re interested please get in touch by emailing roadsafetyweek@brake.org.uk!
