JEAN TODT OPENS THE POSTER EXHIBITION
Jean Todt, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety,
accompanied by Global Road Safety Ambassador Michelle Yeoh, joined the
Global Meeting and opened an exhibition of posters showing members’ road
safety work around the world.
At the exhibition, 44 NGOs had the opportunity to present their posters
and explain their work to the dignitaries. Jean Todt listened to their
experiences, made suggestions, and offered to raise NGOs’ concerns with
high-level stakeholders. Our NGOs were extremely proud to be able to
share their work and we thank Jean Todt and Michelle Yeoh for supporting
the NGO community.

FROM GLOBAL COMMITMENT...HIGH-LEVEL SYMPOSIUM PERSPECTIVES
“We have not seen the level of progress that road safety needs. NGOs
must play an important, independent watchdog role, holding their
governments accountable for commitments they have made,” said Lotte
Brondum, in her opening speech at the symposium on road injury
prevention and the Sustainable Development Goals held during the Global
Meeting. “It is vital that NGOs can speak up about shortcomings without
being seen as anti-government.”
Three high-level panels, consisting of NGO leaders and influencers, and
including Etienne Krug, WHO; Matthew Baldwin, European Commission; and
Soames Job, GRSF; discussed the progress made during the Decade of
Action and how NGOs have leveraged the 2020 target to reduce road deaths
and injuries by 50%. Amid the challenges of lack of funding and
political will, the panelists called on the NGO audience to grow their
influence with their governments and push for strategic road safety

... TO LOCAL ACTION: PHOTO EXHIBITION AND UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK
From global reflections at the symposium in the morning to
demonstrations of local action in the afternoon. Global Meeting
participants demonstrated their support of the Fifth UN Global Road
Safety Week (UNGRSW) with a visit to Christos Polentas Memorial Park and
a procession through Chania Old Town. Participants carried 154
photographs of road victims to symbolize the number of people killed
every hour on the world’s roads.
A photo exhibition of members’ work, held at the landmark Arsenali
building on the harbor in Chania and sponsored by FedEx Express Europe,
demonstrated the challenges faced by road users around the world and how
NGOs are addressing these challenges. Participants added their demands
and commitments to speech-bubble signboards and added them to the
exhibition.
The Global Meeting also featured a session on preparing for UNGRSW. NGOs
were urged to get involved, start campaigning using the #SpeakUp
hashtag, and register their activities on the UNGRSW website. Find out

ANNOUNCING THE FEDEX ROAD SAFETY AWARD WINNERS
We are excited to announce the recipients of the 2019 FedEx Road Safety
Awards, which were presented at the Global Meeting by Rock Sherman,
FedEx Express Europe. This year’s awards celebrate three organizations
that represent role models within the Alliance and have significantly
grown their capacity to achieve national, regional, or international
significance. The award winners are:
- Ambassadeurs de la Sécurité Routière, Tunisia
- Eastern Alliance for Safe & Sustainable Transport (EASST)
- Safe Kids Philippines

THE ROAD TO SWEDEN 2020
At the High-Level Symposium, Lotte Brondum presented Lena Kling, Deputy
Director-General, Division of Transport and Society, Ministry of
Enterprise and Innovation, Government of Sweden, with an NGO
declaration. The declaration called on governments to:
- Extend SDG target 3.6 until 2030 and embed the Voluntary Targets in national policy
- Take the lead in road safety and road victim support by
putting the needs of people and communities at the center of road safety
actions
- Recognize and involve NGOs
- Scale up financing for road safety and build road safety strategies on evidence

On the final day of the Global Meeting, Anders Lie, Special Advisor,
presented the Swedish Government’s plans for the Third Global
Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Stockholm next year and
encouraged NGOs to push for their government ministers to attend. Read

NEW BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED
Congratulations to Prerana Arora Singh, People’s Trust Jaipur, India,
and Kulanthayan Mani, Safe Kids Malaysia, who were elected to the
Alliance Board of Directors at the Fourth General Assembly. There was a
strong field of candidates for the two Board positions available,
reflecting the strength of our member organizations and their commitment
to serve.
We would also like to thank our retiring Board Members, Jeffrey Witte, a
founding member and driving force behind the establishment of the
Alliance, and Ndèye Awa Sarr, who has been a key figure in moving the
Africa Chapter forward.

“Really it's been a decade of preparation, of mobilization, of building
capacity,” said David Ward, Towards Zero Foundation. “In a way, the real
decade of action and implementation is the one that is coming.”
Towards Zero Foundation has launched #50by30: a campaign to push the SDG
and Decade of Action target to reduce road death and injuries by 50%
from 2020 to 2030.
We know that the 2020 target has helped the NGO community to bring road
safety to the attention of policy makers, even though it is now clear
that it will not be met. The Alliance therefore strongly supports this
campaign to extend the target and give governments a continuing goal to
halve road deaths in their countries. Read more on Towards Zero

EASST: TOURISM AND ROAD SAFETY AND 10TH ANNIVERSARY
The Eastern Alliance for Safe & Sustainable Transport (EASST),
recipients of the FedEx Road Safety Award, celebrated two other
important milestones during the Global Meeting: their 10th anniversary
and the launch of their new report International Tourism and Road Safety in Greece in
collaboration with Make Roads Safe Hellas. The location was
particularly significant, because Chania, where the Global Meeting was
held, was one of the three locations that the report’s data was based
