PREPARING FOR SWEDEN
This month, the Alliance in Sweden to join the planning committee
meeting for the Third Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety (the
Ministerial Conference), to be held in February 2020.
2020 marks the final year of the Decade of Action for Road Safety
2011–2020 and the Conference aims to achieve global consensus among
national government ministers for a continued global effort toward 2030.
It is vital that NGOs start engaging relevant ministers and their
departments, to explain the imperative for a continued target and
encourage them to attend the Ministerial Conference. Read more about how

how Alliance member Hope for Victims of Traffic Accidents (HOVITA),
Uganda, is bringing the Ministerial Conference to the attention of its
government and has already secured the commitment of a minister to
attend.

EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK ROUNDTABLE
As part of the official launch of this year’s European Mobility Week, on
16 September 2019, European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc,
will be hosting a European Road Safety Roundtable as part of the series
of Round the World Roundtables organized by the Alliance during the
lead-up to the Third Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, in
Sweden, in February 2020. The roundtable will be based on the recently
published European Union Road Safety Policy Framework 2021–2030.
Alliance members based in Europe will have the opportunity to attend the
roundtable.
The Round the World Roundtables are part of the Alliance’s #CommitToAct
campaign to encourage leaders to commit and act for road safety. Read

ALLIANCE CYCLING ADVOCATE PROGRAM PRESENTED AT VELO-CITY
The Alliance’s Safer Cycling Advocate Program was presented today at the
European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF)’s Velo-City conference in Dublin,
Ireland, by Rock Sherman, Vice President of European Road Network, FedEx
Express.
The program, a collaboration between the Alliance and FedEx Express
Europe, working together with ECF to define safe cycling practices, aims
to improve safety for vulnerable road users in Balkan cities. It will
empower NGOs to promote measures to improve cycling safety through
infrastructure, policy, and awareness and increase the numbers of
cyclists, while also reducing road fatalities. Read more HERE.

AFRICAN ROAD SAFETY OBSERVATORY FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The African Road Safety Observatory (ARSO) was launched last year to
address the need for a coordinated road safety response among countries
in Africa. This week, in Durban, South Africa, the African Union
Commission and the Africa Transport Policy Program are hosting the First
Annual General Assembly of the ARSO to discuss its mission and work
plan.
Although primarily targeted at government representatives, several
Alliance member NGOs were invited to attend. Bright Oywaya, ASIRT Kenya,
was among panelists discussing the benefits of the ARSO. She took the
opportunity to emphasize the role of NGOs in the observatory's

FIRST GLOBAL FLEET CHAMPIONS AWARD IN KENYA
The first Global Fleet Champions Award, an initiative from Alliance
member Brake, was awarded to Easy Coach Ltd, Kenya, during the Fifth
United Nations (UN) Global Road Safety Week last month by Pamoja Road
Safety Initiative, which is also an Alliance member.
The Global Fleet Champions Awards celebrate the best safety and
sustainability standards of corporate fleets around the world, including
in low- and middle-income countries. Easy Coach was recognized as a
role model for other bus companies across sub-Saharan Africa for its use
of fleet management information systems to deliver a safe, efficient

NEW VOLUNTARY TARGETS WEBINARS: HELMETS AND SEAT BELTS
We have released two more webinars in our series NGOs and the Voluntary Targets.
- Target 7: Increase correct helmet use of standard helmets.
Hoang Thi Na Huong of the AIP Foundation explains why motorcycle
helmets are so important and how to campaign for increased helmet use.
- Target 8: Increase correct use of safety belts and child
restraints. Lika Merabishvili of Partnership for Road Safety talks about
advocating for increased seat belt usage.
