HAPPY NEW YEAR: 2019 HIGHLIGHTS In May 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) hosted a meeting in Brussels. The resulting Brussels Declaration paved the way for the founding of the Alliance. Today, 10 years on, the Alliance is an independent organization with 241 member organizations in 92 countries. The declaration's collective spirit is demonstrated in the powerful work we have done together in 2019. This year, as a community: 270 NGOs and other stakeholders came together at the Sixth Global Meeting of Nongovermental Organizations Advocating for Road Safety Alliance member #SpeakUp campaigns funded by FIA Foundation and FedEx for UN Global Road Safety Week reached 78,000 people directly, with an indirect reach of 22 million though media and billboards 16 roundtables achieved 18 commitments from local and national decision makers to act for safer roads 6,178 People's Survey responses and 10,258 signatures on the People's Declaration gathered the voices of citizens around the world to show leaders that they must act on behalf of their people to save lives 17 new members joined the Alliance 41 NGOs, government officials, academics, government officials, and others in Kenya and Senegal developed action plans to collaborate on data collection and analysis at two LEARN workshops organized by the Alliance and IRF Geneva NGOs around the world commemorated World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. ALLIANCE MEMBERS WIN PRINCE MICHAEL AWARD  Each year, the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards recognize outstanding and innovative road safety initiatives of businesses and organizations, including NGOs, worldwide. This year, four Alliance members received the prestigious award: Association Les Ambassadeurs de la Sécurité Routière  (ASR) for its seatbelt campaign Belarusian Auto Moto Touring Club (BKA) for its Road Safety Education Programme New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) for its Crash Test Laboratory Safe Kids Worldwide and FedEx for their Safe School Zones project Other recipients include the UPS Foundation, for its support of the AIP Foundation's Safety Delivered project, and the World Health Organization (WHO), for its implementation of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011–2020. #CLAIMINGOURSPACE: WORLD YOUTH ASSEMBLY "It's time we shift the paradigm that young people are 'problem road users' to showing that young people can be active change agents and assets for road safety," says Manpreet Darroch, Youth for Road Safety (YOURS), speaking on behalf of the Global Youth Taskforce for Road Safety. The taskforce, comprising young road safety advocates, is hosting consultations with young people around the world in the lead-up to the 2nd World Youth Assembly for Road Safety to be held on 18 February 2020, on the eve of the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, in Sweden. The World Youth Assembly is organized by the task force and will bring together 200 young leaders from different walks of life under the tagline #ClaimingOurSpace to focus on safe mobility and establishing a place for young people at the decision-making table. STRATEGIC PLAN READY FOR AFRICA CHAPTER In 2018, the Alliance’s Africa Chapter was launched to connect Alliance members in Africa more closely, build momentum, and strengthen the road safety NGO community. A strategic plan is now ready, thanks to the ongoing input of our members in Africa and particularly the editorial group of members that drafted the plan. We are excited to get started on the next steps: to build partnerships and gain funding to implement the chapter. We asked two members, Bright Oywaya from ASIRT (Kenya) and Ahmed Shelbaya from the NADA Foundation for Safer Egyptian Roads, about their perspectives. ROUND THE WORLD ROUNDTABLES Congratulations to our member organizations that have held Round the World Roundtables this month. SPREAD THE PEOPLE'S DECLARATION  This week, the People's Declaration reached 10,000 signatures. In Ethiopia, Save the Nation have gathered 2,800 signatures so far, and five other NGOs have gathered more than 1,000 signatures each: Efthita Rhodes, Greece; Avoid Accident, India; Road Safety Pioneers, Iran; Safe Kids Worldwide Philippines; and South Africans Against Drunk Driving. Our congratulations to all the NGOs that are pushing the Declaration and gathering the signatures of community members to call for safer roads and safer lives. Also, a special thanks to those who have helped with translation, enabling us to make the Declaration available in other languages. Can you help us to reach the next milestone of 15,000, or even 20,000, before the end of January? The Declaration is available in 10 languages so far and can be used as a tool to gather community support for evidence-based action to keep people safe on the roads.
