ARE YOU READY FOR THE #LOVE30 UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK?
It's only two weeks until the UN Global Road Safety Week. NGOs are planning their advocacy, not just for the Week, but as part of a long term push for 30km/h on streets where people and vehicles mix. This is an opportunity to use a global campaign for meaningful change that will save lives.

The UN Global Road Safety Week WEBSITE has lots of resources to help you plan your Streets for Life #Love30 advocacy: Check out three stories for more inspiration on ways to use the UN Global Road Safety Week BELOW.

JOIN THE #LOVE30 GLOBAL RALLY AND CALL TO ACTION DAY
The Alliance's focal event for UN Global Road Safety Week will be the #Love30 Global Rally at 2pm CEST on 19 May 2021. We invite you to join us for the rally, which will be a call to action for civil society. During the event, we will present our NGOs community data on 30 km/h implementations around the world and legislators will make their endorsements.

Also on 19 May, join our Call to Action Day to show your support for 30 km/h streets. Throughout the day, we will post photos and videos. Add your voice to our Twitter Storm at 9am CEST, 3pm CEST (straight after the #Love30 Global Rally), and 9pm CEST, to create a flood of 30 km/h support.

To join the Twitter Storm:
  • Take a photograph or video of yourself with the UN Global Road Safety Week materials
  • Post your photo or video at 9am CEST, 3pm CEST, or 9pm CEST on social media with a caption about why you support 30 km/h streets
  • Remember to use the hashtags #Love30 and #StreetsForLife and tag @roadsafetyngos
  • You could also tag your decision makers and invite them to support 30 km/h too
  • Like and share each other's posts to magnify the impact

ARGENTINA: 30 KM/H FOR CYCLISTS
Luchemos Por La Vida and Asociación Madres del Dolor’s joint campaign for UN Global Road Safety Week gained an early boost earlier this month when the Mayor of San Isidro, Argentina, gave a commitment to expand the number of 30 km/h streets in the city. Initially, the municipality will lower the limit on streets where there are cycle lanes. They will then identify other streets to prioritise and implement 30km/h limits, with input from the NGOs.

The NGOs are working in coalition under the Alliance Incubator Program to improve cycling safety in cities in Argentina. Their 30 km/h campaign for the UN Global Road Safety Week is an integral element of their overall advocacy objective: low-speed streets that are safer for cyclists. Read more HERE.

UK: COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION FOR A DEFAULT 20 MPH LIMIT
Rod King of 20’s Plenty for Us is a well-known advocate for 20 mph (30 km/h) limits in the UK. 20’s Plenty operates through a network of local campaigners, empowering communities to advocate for low-speed streets.

For UN Global Road Safety Week, it is bringing together these campaigners so that they in turn can mobilize their community members toward a national law for a 20 mph urban default limit, which has recently been implemented across Wales but not in the other three nations of the UK. It is doing so by encouraging people to write to their Member of Parliament (MP), whose role is to represent their local community at national level, using the Streets for Life open letter and demanding a national 20 mph law. Read more HERE.

Rod has been running capacity building sessions in preparation for the week with Alliance members. Watch his session on Effective Road Safety Activism HERE.

ZAMBIA: CAR-FREE DAY SUPPORTING 30 KM/H ADVOCACY
This month, Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) organized the first car-free day in Lusaka, Zambia. The day, which will become a monthly event, supports the ongoing implementation of 30 km/h in the country.

In 2019, 30 km/h limits for urban streets became law nationally across Zambia. You can read about ZRST’s role in advocating for this important change HERE. Now, their focus turns to implementation and awareness. The car-free day is part of this advocacy action and is a milestone in Lusaka’s commitment to encourage motorists to try alternative means of transportation for just one day. Read more HERE.

SAFER CYCLING ADVOCATE PROGRAM EXTENDED
The Alliance, FedEx Express Europe, and the European Cycling Federation (ECF) have announced the extension of the Safer Cycling Advocate Program (SCAP) to include select locations in Spain, Italy, and Poland.

In addition to equipping NGOs to advocate for safer cycling, one city in each of the three countries will host a small fleet of cargo bicycles, for shared public use, in order to encourage a transition from private vehicles to zero emissions bicycles.

Read more HERE and access the SCAP guide and tools HERE. Alliance members in Europe can sign up to the next round of training HERE.

TWO YEARS SINCE THE SIXTH GLOBAL MEETING IN CHANIA
Two years ago, in April 2019, Alliance members gathered together in Chania, Greece, in preparation for the previous UN Global Road Safety Week and the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety. A lot has happened since then. We are delighted to see how much that NGOs called for in the Chania Declaration is included in the Stockholm Declaration and UN Resolution on Improving Global Road Safety. Read the Chania Declaration HERE and see highlights from the 2019 Global Meeting HERE.

Normally, the Global Meeting is held every two years. Sadly, the ongoing pandemic prevents us from meeting together this year. An important component of the Global Meeting is the General Assembly, where members of the Alliance review the Alliance's activities, governing documents, and elect new Board Members. The Board has decided that the General Assembly should also be deferred until we are able to meet together as an Alliance, which we assume to be in 2022. Read a statement from Rochelle Sobel, Chair of the Board HERE

NEW MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES TO STRENGTHEN NGOs' VOICE
More NGOs are now eligible to join the Alliance community through a new membership structure, launched yesterday, that will strengthen the voice of civil society and build a broader coalition of support for safer roads.

In addition to the existing full membership, two new membership categories have been added: Associate Membership and Friends of the Alliance. Read more about the membership categories and apply to join the Alliance HERE.
