FROM CAMPAIGNING TO ADVOCACY

Strong momentum was gained during the UN Global Road Safety Week and now NGOs must convert that momentum into sustained advocacy for policy change.

The Alliance and EASST held a training session this month to strengthen NGOs' capacity to develop their demands into policy change, considering policy research, planning, and action, and setting the learning in the context of the #Love30 campaign and policy advocacy toward the high-level meeting in July 2022. Catch up with the slides and session recordings HERE.
This was the first in a series of training sessions to equip NGOs in readiness for the launch of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety, the high-level meeting, and continued advocacy toward the 2030 target. See upcoming sessions BELOW

PROGRESS ON NATIONAL 30 KM/H LAWS
Following from the #Love30 campaign, several NGOs have been able to use the global focus on 30 km/h limits to gain commitment for draft legislation to be introduced to their national parliaments.

Read about the advocacy journey in ARGENTINA, KENYA, and MOLDOVA including how NGOs are building the support of decision makers to get the legislation through their parliamentary systems.

SDG 3.6 UNDER REVIEW AT THE 2021 HIGH-LEVEL POLITICAL FORUM (HLPF)

Each year in July, UN Member States gather in New York to review progress on the Sustainable Development Agenda at the HLPF. Each year, specific SDGs are set for review and, this year, SDG 3: Health and Well-being is among these. This includes SDG 3.6, to reduce road deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030, giving an opportunity for scrutiny and accountability on governments' progress toward this goal. 42 countries presented their progress on the SDGs through Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). You can see which countries presented VNRs and read them HERE.

The Alliance submitted a joint statement to the HLPF, together with FIA Foundation and YOURS, using our UN consultative status. The statement called for 30 km/h streets as a tool toward achievement of the SDGs. Read it HERE.

FIA Foundation has published a useful infographic (shown above) demonstrating why road safety is integrated and indivisible to the wider SDG agenda.

WHAT DOES ROAD SAFETY HAVE TO DO WITH CRIMINALIZATION?

Recently, the Alliance took part in an online seminar organized by Accountability International on Africa Challenges Criminalization. The conference brought together advocates from fields as diverse as sexuality, suicide, and COVID-19 to explore a common issue: how over-criminalizing behavior is hampering progress on the SDGs. The interconnectivity of the theme is demonstrated in the graphic above, created by the seminar's artist during the panel.

Lotte Brondum, speaking during a panel on the impact of criminalization, alongside representatives from Amnesty International; Fair Trials; and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, pointed to the Safe System approach as a way of addressing the traditional view of road safety, where blame for crashes is often placed largely on road users without considering the failings of the system.
