The International Transport Forum (ITF) published recently a new Report titled The Safe System Approach in Action with the active participation of NTUA. Road crashes kill over 1.3 million people every year worldwide and seriously injure millions more. A Safe System approach to road safety can drastically reduce road deaths – but how can it actually be put in place? This Report provides experience-based guidance on implementing the Safe System approach worldwide.  link  pdf5

Latest Developments

The UN Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, launched the Book “The Road Ahead, 26 voices for Safe and Sustainable Mobility” with support from the UNRSF on 22 June 2022 at the European Development Days (EDD) Conference in Brussels. The Book includes a selection of essays from leading specialists, covering a wide array of global road safety issues: Green and Sustainable Cities, Economic Growth, Quality Education, Health, Gender Equality, Partnership.   pdf5

Τhe European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has published the 43rd PIN Flash Report titled Reducing Child Deaths on European Roads. This report examines the latest data on child road deaths from across the EU and other countries that form part of ETSC’s Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) programme. It also looks at the main measures for reducing the risks to children including mobility policies and improved infrastructure, child restraint systems, vehicle safety, helmet use, pre-hospital care and licensing of young drivers who, in some countries, are able to ride a moped or scooter at the age of 14. link pdf5

The Final Synthesis Report of the European Survey of Road Users’ Safety Attitudes (ESRA) has been published with the active contribution of NTUA, containing a wealth of information on road safety in 48 countries, based on the ESRA2 survey. The results of the survey were published through a series of Reports: 15 Thematic Reports on road safety topics, the Country Fact Sheets and the 2022 Main Report.  pdf5

The World Road Association – PIARC recently published a Report titled “State of the Art in Road Design Standards“. The document aims to identify similarities and differences between the approaches adopted in different countries and evaluates the possible need of their adaptation to the requirements of a rapidly changing world in the field of road transport systems: new technologies, changes in mobility modes (new propulsion techniques, new personal transport mode, and connected and autonomous driving) and availability of multiple diffused data sources.

The Research Institute of Human Factors in Road Safety together with Faculty of Social Sciences at  Bar Ilan Center University co-organised with great success the 30th Annual Conference of Road Safety, which took place online on 28 July 2022. Thirteen Israeli lecturers and six lecturers from US, UK, Australia, Germany, Greece and Italy presented their original research on this international scientific conference NTUA actively contributed with the following presentation :

The ESRA2 Group (E-Survey of Road Users’ Attitudes) together with IFSTTAR/Universite Gustave Eiffel organised with great success the International Conference on Traffic Safety Culture and Performance Indicators that was held online, on 21 April 2022. The Conference was an opportunity to learn from in-depth scientific analyses of the ESRA databases, in relation to different types of road users and different aspects of attitudes, behavior and culture and highlight key road safety problems and solutions NTUA actively contributed with the following  presentations:

The EU-funded Horizon 2020 project Levitate (Societal Level Impacts of Connected and Automated Vehicles) organized with great success the Project’s Final Conference, which was held in Brussels, on 25 May 2022. The LEVITATE partners shared the results achieved and the tools developed to assess the potential societal impacts of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) on the mobility system and wider livability goals, including safety, the environment, the economy and society. A focused presentation of the Levitate CCAM Policy Support Tool is also foreseen.   NTUA actively contributed with the following presentations :

A paper titled “The role of values in road safety culture: Examining the valuation of freedom to take risk, risk taking and accident involvement in three countries” authored by Tor-Olav NævestadAlexandra Laiou, Tova Rosenbloom, Rune Elvikand George Yannis is published in Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour. National focus on individual freedom versus paternalistic values is a fundamental theme, which defines the status of traffic safety in different countries. Linear and logistic regression model results indicate that Greek drivers value freedom to take risk in traffic higher than drivers from Norway and Israel. Greek drivers also expect higher levels of risk taking from other drivers in their country, they report higher levels of risky driving themselves, and are more often involved in accidents. Thus, it seems that values have an important role in Road Safety Culture (RSC), legitimizing and motivating risky driving, which are related to accidents. doi

An NTUA Diploma Thesis called “Critical factors of pedestrians self-declared behaviour and safety in Greece” was recently presented by Alexandros Ntontis. For the purpose of this Diploma Thesis, two binary logistic regression models and a Structural Equation Model (SEM) were developed, using data from the second edition of the ESRA survey. The results showed that a pedestrian who will engage more frequently in crossing the road with red pedestrian light is more likely to also engage in crossing the road at places other than at a nearby pedestrian crossing. pdf5 ppt5

Upcoming Events

The Horizon 2020 project HADRIAN  (Holistic Approach for Driver Role Integration and Automation Allocation for European Mobility Needs) issued recently the 2nd Newsletter, with updates on the main project activities, focusing on studying the effects of haptic feedback, optimized head-up displays, adding predictability of the automated drive, and improved visual and auditory display elements and many more – all in the context of a holistic view on automated driving

The Forum of European Road Safety Research Organisations (FERSI) is organising the 2022 Road Safety Conference which will take place on 6-7 October 2022 in Hague, Netherlands. This highly interesting Conference focuses on the exchange of national and regional experiences and implemented evidence-based road safety measures, both positive and negative ones. There will be a specific focus on the road to successful implementation, including overcoming the barriers encountered along the way.

The Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) is organising the Global Regional Road Safety Observatories (GRRSO) Dialogue on Powered Two-Wheeler Safety, that will be held as a hybrid event (in Manila, Philippines and online) on 11-12 October 2022. The event will bring together an unprecedented range of global experts and practitioners striving to address deaths and serious injuries resulting from motorcycle crashes. Additionally, it will provide a unique opportunity to address issues relating to countries and cities where powered two-wheelers are the predominant form of transport. link

The European Commission funded Baseline project (Collection of Key Performance Indicators for Road Safety in the EU) organises the Road Safety KPIs Conference which will be held as a hybrid event (in Brussels and online), on 19 October 2022. The results of the extensive data collection and analysis performed in the EU countries will be presented covering all 8 KPIs defined at the EU road safety strategic action plan: Speed, Alcohol, Distraction, Safety belt, Helmet, Vehicle safety, Infrastructure and Post-crash care.

The European Commission and the Agência Nacional de Inovação (ANI) together with the European Transport Research Platforms ACARE, ALICE, CEDR, ECTP, ERRAC, ERTRAC, ETRA and Waterborne, are organising the Transport Research Arena Conference (TRA2022) which will be held in Lisbon, on 14-17 November 2022.
