Our campaigns in 2024

At Brake we campaign for the solutions that we know will have the biggest impact on stopping road crashes, reducing harm and supporting victims.

There are so many issues to fight for in road safety but in 2024 we’re focusing on four key topics, with activity taking place throughout the year and beyond.

There are opportunities to sponsor research to support our campaign activity, so if your organisation is interested in partnering with us on this important work please email the Brake team on corporate@brake.org.uk.

In 2024, we are campaigning for...

1. Default 20mph speed limits on all roads in built-up areas across the UK
Our neighbourhood and community spaces should be places of safety, yet in 2022, 593 people died on urban roads in Britain, a number that includes 385 pedestrians and 91 cyclists. Thousands more were seriously injured. Reducing the default speed limits to 20mph on roads in built-up areas will help more people walk and cycle safely.
2. Progressive licensing for young and newly qualified drivers
Young drivers aged 17–24 are consistently over-represented in road casualty statistics each year. We need more safeguards to be introduced for young and newly qualified drivers. A progressive licensing system could help reduce the number of deaths.
3. Zero-tolerance on drink-driving
Drinking any alcohol can impair our driving. The current law in England and Wales makes some people think driving after one or two drinks is safe – it isn’t. Let’s change that, and make drink-driving a thing of the past.
4. All new vehicles to have life-saving technology fitted as standard
There is no good reason for any new car to be built without the life-saving vehicle safety technology outlined in the General Safety Regulations. We helped shape these regulations which have now been adopted in the EU. Now it’s time for us to raise the standard in the UK and make all new vehicles as safe as they can be.

Brake’s Kids Walk is back for 2024

Registrations are now open to take part in Brake’s Kids Walk 2024 on Wednesday 19 June.

Primary schools and youth groups are invited to sign up to receive a free action pack of teaching resources to help children aged 4-11 take part in a walk in their local community and share important road safety messages.

On average, six children are killed or seriously injured on UK roads every day – that's equivalent to a whole class of children every single week. Brake’s Kids Walk is a great way to engage children with road safety issues, promote the benefits of walking and raise awareness among parents, carers and the wider community about the need to protect children on roads.

Please share this campaign with your network and encourage your local schools to take part.
