Position Announcement: Ph.D. Thesis Research Scholarships at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia

QUT, the Malaysian Automotive Institute and the AutoCRC (Automotive Cooperative Research Centre) are seeking three creative, motivated individuals to undertake a three-year PhD degree at the Queensland University of Technology (Primary Supervisor Prof Simon Washington). In pursuit of the PhD degree, the student will be immersed in a three year, industry-funded project spanning four countries. This scholarship provides an opportunity to obtain a PhD degree from a highly competitive Australian University, while gaining invaluable industry led international research experience. There are up to three PhD scholarships available under this research program.
Degree: PhD in Civil Engineering
Project title: Market Intelligence and Technology Assessment (MITA 2025) – "Energy Efficient Vehicles towards a Green Mobility Solution for ASEAN and Australia"
Industry host: Malaysian Automotive Institute through the Australian Auto CRC
Project Background: This research will support and further position Australia and Malaysia as technology leaders in the ASEAN and Australian Marketplaces. Through state of the art applied behavioural and econometric research, this 3-year project will inform the MAI, AutoCRC, and project stakeholder groups on the critical roles that vehicle technologies, policies, regulations, standards, and energy markets play in the success of Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) technology uptake and deployment in the Australian and ASEAN marketplace by 2025. The research will focus on issues surrounding EEV deployment in Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
While the thesis projects will vary slightly across each scholarship and depending on the country(s) of focus, all PhD thesis projects involved in this research will involve:
• A literature review focused on market opportunities and barriers around EEVs in relation to one or more countries
• Both demand and supply-side evaluation of technology deployment
• Design of revealed and stated preference national surveys
• Applied Behavioural Econometric modelling and/or market analysis
• Effective engagement and cooperation with a large industry led research team
• Engagement and/or facilitation of 'futuring' activities with focus on the year 2025
• Presentation of research findings to various internal and external stakeholder groups
• Co-authorship of reports, summaries, and technical papers on research methods and outcomes
Qualifications required of student applicants:
• Bachelor's Degree in Policy Evaluation, Civil Engineering, Transport Engineering, Urban Planning, Business, or Economics.
• Master's by research degree in related field or undergraduate under-graduate honours
• Qualifications sufficient for entry into QUT
Qualifications desired of student applicants:
• Work or research experience, concentrated coursework, or other demonstrated focus on clean vehicle technologies
• Record of solid academic performance, particularly in relevant skill sets
• Experience in applied behavioural econometrics.
Location and management:
Student will enrol as a QUT PhD student. Students will work in an industry led and internally coordinated project with other students, with QUT professional staff and academics, with possible travel to other participating countries (Indonesia, Thailand, or Malaysia).
Scholarship/finance support package:
• Stipend: $28k per year (tax free) provided through the AutoCRC
• Up to $5k per year Travel allowance for conferences (at student discretion)
• QUT tuition waiver scholarship
