ANNOUNCEMENT: UN ROAD SAFETY TRUST FUND

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety (the Alliance) welcomes the new UN Road Safety Trust Fund, which was launched today at the UN headquarters, New York, US, and is proud to have been invited to represent Alliance members and wider civil society at this significant event.

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) estimates that every US$1,500 contributed to the Road Safety Trust Fund could save one life, prevent ten serious injuries, and leverage US$51,000 in road safety investment.

The Alliance and its members have advocated for global road safety funding that includes civil society for a long time. The launch of the fund demonstrates that the NGO voice has been heard. We will continue to push to ensure a multisectoral approach and NGO representation in all steps within the decision making for the fund.

In her speech at the launch, Lotte Brondum, Executive Director, the Alliance, said: “Funding is our NGOs’ biggest worry and their greatest constraint. The UN Road Safety Trust Fund is a major milestone in our work to save lives on the world’s roads. The fund will facilitate more durable and productive partnerships between NGOs, their governments, and other stakeholders, and it will make scaling up national and local road safety interventions more feasible. NGOs will be able to demonstrate the comparative advantage they bring to advocacy, service delivery, monitoring and data collection because of their local knowledge and relationships.”
