#COMMITTOACT #CommitToAct is a new campaign from the Alliance and its members. It supports NGOs' demands for specific local and national government actions toward achieving the targets in the new UN resolution on Improving Global Road Safety, including a 50% reduction in road deaths and injuries by 2030, and pushing support for safer, more sustainable post-pandemic streets. NGOs can use the unified identity and activities of #CommitToAct to support their calls for action in their countries. For some, this will be to prioritize pedestrians or cyclists; for others, it might be school zones, road infrastructure, helmets, or other needs. ARE SAFE ROADS A RIGHT? The theme of the 2020 #CommitToAct campaign is "Our Roads, Our Right" / "Safety is our right." The campaign aims to help government leaders and citizens to recognize that we should all have the right to reach work, school, or home safely and without fear, connecting to the right to "life, liberty, and security of a person," set out in Article 3 of the Declaration of Human Rights. The idea of road safety as a right isn't new. It is a concept that has been referenced by both road safety and human rights advocates. #COMMITTOACT IN ACTION: CHANDIGARH, INDIA #CommitToAct is a vehicle for NGOs to push relevant issues and demand specific commitment and action. In Chandigarh, India, ArriveSAFE, is using the campaign to demand action on two issues: 1. Implementation of safety requirements and audit reports for road construction projects and in road construction zones "We will take #CommitToAct photos and videos at some of these locations," says Harman Sidhu, ArriveSAFE's founder. "Subsequently, we will take up our demands with the authorities so they will take the necessary remedial action. We have already shortlisted some such stretches, studied the audit reports, and collected data on crashes." 2. The rights of pedestrians in Chandigarh ArriveSAFE is using photos and videos to demonstrate the issues facing pedestrians. The campaign photo above, taken outside the office of the Member of Parliament for Chandigarh, is an example of the challenges that ArriveSAFE is bringing to the attention of leaders. #COMMITTOACT IN ACTION: PORTO ALEGRE, BRAZIL In the first phase of #CommitToAct in 2019, Thiago Gonzaga Foundation held a Round the World Roundtable leading to a commitment from the mayor to assess five school zones in the city and implement the changes needed to achieve internationally recognized standards. Now, mayoral elections are looming and Thiago Gonzaga Foundation is pushing to ensure that this work, known as the Safe Path project, continues if a new mayor is elected. The Foundation has combined its #CommitToAct demands into its Voting for Life youth campaign, holding a series of online meetings between with each of the mayoral candidates and young people in the city. "We ask the candidates to commit to act for safer roads if they are elected," says Eduardo Bohn, Public Policies and International Relations. "Moreover, we ask them to commit to keep the Safe Path project. We have already talked to seven candidates. So far, all of them have committed to keep the project." HOW TO GET INVOLVED The overall aim of #CommitToAct is to engage government leaders to implement specific road safety actions, especially those that improve safety for non-motorized road users in line with the UN resolution. There are three elements to the campaign and different ways to get involved. Use our action plan guide to design your campaign and identify your call for action: Raising awareness: help people to see that safety is our right Join the social media campaign Use the infographic builder to build the case for your campaign  Mobilizing support: our leaders need to know that their citizens demand change Make and share a petition for specific action Plan a community activation (within social distancing constraints) Engage media as champions and build coalitions with other sectors Leadership: push for commitments that lead to action Negotiate written commitments with local and national leaders for the commitment tracker and follow up on existing commitments Read more ways to get involved HERE.

AFRICA CHAPTER CAMPAIGN TRAINING Last week, the Alliance and the UN Environment Share the Road Programme, organized campaign management training for Alliance members in Africa, through the Africa Chapter, sponsored by Total Foundation and FedEx. The training was held in Nairobi, Kenya, but with NGOs from 14 other countries dialing in via Zoom to enable participation from across Africa, despite ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. It featured experts from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) and World Resources Institute (WRI) and focused on evidence-based campaigns to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, who make up more than a third of journeys across Africa. Read the press release HERE.

SAFER CYCLING ADVOCATE TRAINING With public attention and government support for cycling increasing across many European countries as a result of the pandemic, there is an urgent need to harness the current momentum and make the conditions right for road users to take to their bicycles. Last weekend, NGOs from Bosnia, Croatia, and Slovenia took part in training on the Safer Cycling Advocate Guide launched in 2019 by the Alliance and the European Cycling Federation (ECF), with sponsorship from FedEx Express Europe via a charitable grant. WORLD DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR ROAD TRAFFIC VICTIMS It's only 15 days until the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR). The tagline is Remember – Support – Act: We REMEMBER those who have died as a result of road crashes We call for SUPPORT for those affected by crashes either as victims or as the loved ones of a victim We ACT to prevent further road deaths and injuries. While COVID-19 means that events will be different this year, many groups are finding powerful ways to commemorate WDoR. In addition to the events taking place around the world, WHO will be hosting an online commemoration on Friday 13 November. It will feature testimonies from those who have lost loved ones, including Alliance members Viviam Perrone, Asociación Civil Madres del Dolor, and Writu Bhatta, Swatantrata Abhiyan, as well as speeches from high-level speakers including António Guterres, UN Secretary-General; Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General; and Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica.
