Annual Forum with Cambodia’s Road Safety Network on Commuting Safety for Cambodian Workers (CSCW) hosted by AIP Foundation

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – September 21, 2021

Every day, around 700,000 factory workers in Cambodia put their lives at risk commuting to work on traffic-dense and dangerous roads in order to provide for their families. Cambodian workers make up almost 20% of all crash-related casualties, many of whom are women. As part of the Commuting Safety for Cambodian Workers (CSCW) program, funded by USAID and in partnership with Solidarity Centre, AIP Foundation hosted the virtual Annual Forum with Cambodia’s Road Safety Network.

The event kicked off with introductory remarks by Mr. Pagna Kim, Cambodia Country Director of AIP Foundation and Co-Chairperson of Cambodia’s Road Safety Network, and William Conklin, Cambodia Country Director, Solidarity Center. Leading road safety experts also shared pivotal information about the current situation of road crashes among Cambodian workers, governmental strategies, and measures, as well as initiatives and visions to address this issue. A parallel discussion session followed, focused on how stakeholders can be actively engaged to improve commuting safety for Cambodian workers.

Over 100 participants from civil society actors, private sector, trade union representatives, government institutions, development partners, and relevant stakeholders joined together to find practical life-saving solutions to the dangers faced by factory workers each day as they commute to and from work.

Primary school students learn life-saving and lifelong road safety skills as part of the Chevron Street Wise Program in Thailand

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT Province, Thailand - September 30, 2021

As Covid-19 restrictions eased in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand, we were delighted to see a glimpse of return to ‘normal’ life. During September, road safety activities as part of the Chevron Street Wise program were finally held on-site. This month marked many diverse highlights of Phase III of the program for students of all ages across schools in the region.

Students at Wat Ta Pae School, in Mueang District, were thrilled to explore hands-on 'how to be safe on the roads' at the newly installed Chevron Street Wise Road Safety Corner. The Road Safety Corner serves as an interactive road safety teaching area and tool for the primary students at the school. AIP Foundation also organized a pre-study quiz on road safety for the students from grades 2 to 6 at Wat Ta Pae School to raise awareness about the importance of safety on the road.

A further highlight was marked by Mr. Thanawut Thawornpram, Mayor of Pak Poon Municipality, who was truly honored to be the chairman of the Handover of the Road Simulations to the 5 project schools in Mueang District. The Road Simulation establishes an innovative road safety teaching tool for the primary students. Through the simulation, students will be able to practice life-saving road safety skills and learn how to be safe when traveling to and from school.

One of the most memorable highlights was the filming of the “30 Safety Rules” video as part of the Chevron Street Wise Phase III. The video features key information on how students can stay safe. This video was filmed together with representatives from Nakhon Si Thammarat Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Transport Office, Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Police, Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Public Health Office, Tha Phae Municipality School, and the team from the Faculty of Photography and Video Technology Nakhon Si Thammarat Arts and Crafts College. This video will be officially launched at the end of September.

Chevron Thailand has partnered with AIP Foundation since 2014 to implement the Chevron Street Wise program to create a safer environment for road users - especially young children - through education, awareness-raising, as well as stakeholders, and community engagement. The project has benefited more than 30,000 children, parents, teachers, and community members who have demonstrated improved road safety knowledge and skills.

Journalists and press agencies invited to a collaborative capacity building workshop in Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam - September 24, 2021

Every day journalists and press agencies play a crucial role in improving knowledge and communicating to the wider public on road safety. Their reporting and information save lives on the road. AIP Foundation, in collaboration with the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) and the Transport Newspaper, is hosting a capacity-building workshop with journalists in Vietnam. The workshop is supported by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI).

31 journalists and reporters from diverse media agencies including printed newspapers, online newspapers, radio, and television channels are gathered to attend the full-day workshop. Representatives from the Hanoi Traffic Safety Committee and Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Safety Committee are also attending. Throughout the day, the workshop enhances their knowledge and communication skills on road safety, including the top five behavioral risk factors (drinking and driving, speeding, helmet use, seatbelts, and child restraints), Vision Zero, appropriate language to be used for road safety news, ways of broadcasting on these issues, as well as tools and sources of information for reporting on road safety.
The main objectives of the workshop are to share the technical report highlighting the top behavioral changes that would save the most lives, illustrate the legal impact on reducing fatality and injuries due to road traffic crashes, and showcase the important roles and activities for journalists to promote road safety in the media.

We are delighted to welcome international leading road safety expert, Dr. Judy Fleiter, GRSP Global Manager, to present on the “Key Behavioral Risk Factors: Evidence & Best Practice Legislation” at the workshop. Dr. Judy Fleiter's presentation provides road safety strategic frameworks and insight into key behavioral risk factors, as well as the important role of media in shaping community attitudes. Dr. Judy Fleiter also joins the Q&A session to respond to all the questions from the participants and journalists. Omar Jacob, Communication Advisor at Vital Strategies, will share further information about well-established World Health Organization (WHO) and Pulitzer guidelines on media broadcasting about road safety issues during his presentation.

The workshop also provides the participants a chance to receive the latest updates and changes on road safety policies and regulations relating to 5 behavioral road safety risk factors in Vietnam. An in-depth group discussion aiming at expressing lessons learned and experience in reporting news will follow. It also contributes to improving the journalist and press agencies' knowledge and communication skills on road safety as well as relevant policies. Moreover, the workshop strives to encourage more attention and continued reporting on road safety risk factors that will protect road users from deaths and injuries on the road.

Pirelli gears up to save lives with road safety charity in Asia
Pirelli gears up to save lives with road safety charity in Asia

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam – September 22, 2021

AIP Foundation’s work to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities is made possible through the generous support of our dedicated partners across the public and private sectors. In May, Pirelli donated an exclusive Formula 1 (F1) tire featuring the Italian flag and signatures by all members of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team to raise donations for AIP Foundation’s global road safety efforts. The tire was featured in a silent auction for sports fans around the world — with the auction winner raising approximately $3,500 USD. All proceeds will support AIP Foundation’s delivery of life-saving road crash interventions in developing nations in our region.

We would also like to thank Pirelli for their additional donation of 5,000 euros which will contribute to our life-saving road safety programs targeting at-risk communities across Asia. These funds will provide vital resources for our organization to continue implementing our programs in the region.

Road traffic crashes claim more than 1.35 million lives each year and cause up to 50 million injuries around the world. This is a complex and very real problem that we can solve together. AIP Foundation is committed to fostering collaborations between private corporations, governments, and public sector organizations to implement effective and sustainable safe roads for life. With Pirelli, as a new, trusted collaborator in the fight against road injuries and fatalities, we can work together to improve road safety and save the lives of our younger generations.

We welcome this inspired partnership with Pirelli, bringing together new initiatives and positive impacts for our most vulnerable road users. Grazie, Pirelli, for your truly appreciated support marking our journey ahead.
