ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE DECADE OF ACTION “Advocacy, commitments, funding, and implementation of interventions which do not reduce deaths and injuries are wasting time and resources,” says Chika Sakashita, the Alliance’s Director of Research and Accountability, in an article about accountability on the Alliance’s website.   “The Global Plan tasks governments with the primary accountability to design a safe road transport system and implement a road safety action plan based on evidence of what works,” she continues. “Road safety NGO accountability lies in ensuring that the governments meet all that they are accountable for.” In March, the Alliance will launch its Accountability Toolkit at the Global Meeting to help NGOs to scrutinize their government’s road safety response, then influence and support them to implement specific, evidence-based interventions proven to reduce road deaths and injuries.  Read more about accountability and the roles of government and NGOs HERE.

FIVE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND THE GLOBAL MEETING Have you registered for the Global Meeting yet? Here are five reasons why you should attend: To rethink our journeys: the Alliance will launch its new Accountability Toolkit at the Global Meeting. Throughout the week, we will explore the evidence-based actions that governments must implement to reduce road deaths most effectively and achieve the Decade of Action. To rethink our growth: civil society has a role set out in the Global Plan to help ensure government accountability for road safety. The Global Meeting will empower NGOs with tools and practical sessions to strengthen their organizations and their advocacy. To rethink our role: safe mobility supports equity, climate, and other SDG goals. Through the workshops and symposium, we will explore how linking to these agendas can strengthen our advocacy.  To reconnect with the road safety community: the Global Meeting is an opportunity to mobilize for the upcoming UN Global Road Safety Week, share experiences with our fellow NGOs, and connect with the global safety and mobility community. The UNRSC will hold its meeting back-to-back with the Global Meeting.  To recognize and award best practice: at the Global Meeting, winners of the FedEx Road Safety Award will be celebrated for their commitment, growth, and active involvement in the Alliance and its mission. MEMBER FEATURE: ACCOUNTABILITY FOR CHILDREN'S SAFETY IN GEORGIA In Georgia, 30 km/h limits have been implemented around 96 school zones in three municipalities following an advocacy campaign by Alliance member Partnership for Road Safety (PfRS). PfRS’s advocacy for 30 km/h has been accomplished through a program coordinated by EASST, across seven countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, supported by the Alliance Incubator Program.  Governments are accountable for the safety of the people that they govern. PfRS’s advocacy messaging made children's safety at the center of why the municipalities should implement 30 km/h zones. The NGO used international evidence and pilot schemes to show that 30 km/h limits are an effective way of achieving safer roads. PfRS, as an NGO, has demonstrated accountability for its role in influencing and supporting their government to implement evidence-based interventions proven to reduce road deaths and injuries. NGO ACCOUNTABILITY: CALLS TO ACTION In 2022, Alliance members defined five regional and one global Call to Action ahead of the Seventh Global Meeting in Hungary and the #CommitToAct campaign. The Calls to Action are an advocacy tool for members and formed the basis for the Alliance's advocacy on behalf of its members during 2022.  In the runup to the Eighth Global Meeting, we are reviewing each of the Calls to Action with our members. This enables us to exercise NGO accountability as advocates and representatives for communities around the world. The updated global Call to Action will be presented as the El Salvador Declaration at the Global Meeting Symposium on 8 March 2023.
