Dear Friends and Supporters,
This
month, AIP Foundation took our road safety agenda to the global stage
through international conferences and global road safety campaigns. We
participated in the
International Walk to School Month and
the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
AIP Foundation also traveled to Thailand to advocate for data-driven
road safety strategies to international stakeholders at the
13th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion.
While
we made global contributions to the road safety agenda, we also took
serious strides in our regional helmet use programs. We partnered with
the Swedish Embassy and Consulate General to
bring helmets to nearly 2,000 students at primary schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City during Traffic Safety Day. In Thailand, the
Safe School, Safe Community program concluded, resulting in the
helmet use rate among students at Wat Rachasingkorn School increasing
from 1% to 33% --
4 times higher than the national average. Additionally, our
Helmets for Families program
tackled low helmet wearing rates in Preah Sihanouk Province, Cambodia by donating helmets at primary schools and providing roadside helmet donations.

Walk This Way program celebrates International Walk to School Month and brings pedestrian safety to 500 students in Ho Chi Minh City

AIP
Foundation/Safe Kids Vietnam joined millions of children, parents, and
community leaders from more than 40 countries around the world in
October to celebrate International Walk to School Month. This year AIP
Foundation celebrated and promoted pedestrian safety through a
Walk This Way public awareness parade in Tran Hung Dao Primary School located in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
AIP Foundation has partnered with FedEx Express and Safe Kids Worldwide since 2009 to implement
Walk This Way – a child pedestrian safety program, which
provides education, awareness, enforcement activities, and environmental
modifications at schools.
Walk This Way seeks to improve road user behaviors to keep students safe while they travel to and from school. Currently,
Walk This Way is targeting 45,000 students and teachers at 37
primary and secondary schools along the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor
in Ho Chi Minh City. Since May 2018, infrastructure modification plans
for 4 project schools under
Walk This Way have been developed and approved by the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Safety Committee.

AIP Foundation participates in global campaign for World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2018

AIP
Foundation joined the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety Toolkit
for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) 2018,
which was held on 18 November, 2018. This year's theme is
“Roads have stories to tell.” In support of WDoR, the Global
Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety and the World Health Organization have
created social media banners based on stories from NGOs around the world
that promote key messages connected to the Global Road Safety
Performance Targets. AIP Foundation provided two case studies relating
to helmet use in Vietnam. AIP Foundation and road safety organizations
around the world joined together to commemorate this important day and
bring attention to the 1.25 million people who die annually due to road
crashes and to commemorate the stories of victims and their families.

AIP Foundation promotes data-driven road safety approaches in Southeast Asia at the Safety 2018 World Conference
5-7 November, 2018 – Bangkok
Earlier this month, AIP Foundation gave presentations at the
Safety 2018 World Conference in Bangkok. CEO Mirjam Sidik presented on our Vietnam pedestrian safety program
Walk This Way and the work being done to help students get
safely to school. Thailand Chairperson Ratana H. Winther presented on
the successes of our
Street Wise program in Thailand and Cambodia Country Director Pagna Kim presented on the work done by our
Safety Delivered program to reduce distracted driving among young drivers.
All three presentations were preceded by abstracts which were published in the
Injury Prevention (British Medical Journal). Additionally, AIP
Foundation was selected as a finalist for the 2018 International Safety
Media Awards for our "Tell Auntie Pia" video campaign done in Thailand.

Rotary Club Matilda Bay presents on
Safe School, Safe Community at ARSC 2018
3 October, 2018- Sydney, Australia
At
the Australasian Road Safety Conference (ARSC) 2018, Dr. Sílvia
Shrubsall of Rotary Club Matilda Bay gave a presentation entitled "Child
Road Safety in Bangkok: Implementing Local Measures whilst Advancing
International Awareness and Collaboration" on AIP Foundation's
Safe School, Safe Community program. The presentation focused
on the potential of expanding international collaborations to pursue
child road safety. Indeed, the first Road Safety Rotary Global Grant,
from which the project benefited, drew support from partners in
Australia, South East Asia, Europe and the US and as a result, road
safety became a Rotary priority.
From
May to September 2018, AIP Foundation Thailand joined forces with the
Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) and Rotary International to
implement the school-based road safety program at Wat Rachasingkorn
School in Bangkok. Aimed at increasing helmet use among children and
raising public awareness of the importance of child quality helmet use,
Safe School, Safe Community ultimately sought to reduce
injuries and fatalities from road crashes. At the end of the five-month
project, the helmet use rate among students at Wat Rachasingkorn School
increased from 1% to 33% — 4 times higher than the national average.

Swedish Embassy observes Traffic Safety Day at two primary schools
8-9 November, 2018 - Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City
AIP
Foundation and the Swedish Embassy in Vietnam joined many corporate
partners to distribute nearly 2,000 high-quality helmets to students at
two primary schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Swedish Embassy
gave nearly 1000 helmets to Ba Dinh Primary School in Hanoi and nearly
1000 helmets to Luong The Vinh Primary School in Ho Chi Minh City. At
the events, the organizers called for stronger public awareness and
urged adults to put helmets on children whenever they travel on
motorcycles. Additionally, there was a flash mob dance that encouraged
students to always wear their helmets as well as games that tested their
helmet safety knowledge. The ceremony took place in support of AIP
Foundation’s
Helmet for Kids program, which provides thousands of
high-quality helmets to students across Vietnam as well as road safety
education to them and their teachers and parents every year.
Road
crashes is the number one cause of death for young people aged 15 to 29
and the number two cause of death for children aged 5 to 14 in Vietnam.
With over 80 percent of the population under the age of 50, the effects
of road crash deaths on young people result in losses to both the
family and the larger community.

AIP Foundation presents on youth involvement with road safety and the Sustainable Development Goals
10 November, 2018 – Hanoi
AIP
Foundation presented on our youth-focused road safety initiatives at
the YouthSpeak Forum held in Hanoi, Vietnam, an event that aimed to
bring to light the innovative solutions that youth can lead in order to
build sustainable cities and communities and live sustainable
lifestyles. At the Forum, Communications & Development Coordinator
Samantha Serafica discussed how our Young Ambassadors for Road Safety
have contributed to the Sustainable Development Goals and participated
in a panel discussion on youth-led and youth-focused initiatives with
representatives from UNESCO, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), AIESEC,
and Safetipin.
Earlier
this year, 15 of our Young Ambassadors for Road Safety joined ADB Youth
for Asia and Safetipin on a road safety data collection mission, which
aimed to gather personal safety data around Hanoi’s Active Metro Line 3.
At the YouthSpeak Forum, ADB and Safetipin shared some of the results
of the project and their recommendations to the government.
The
YouthSpeak Forum is part of the Youth4GlobalGoals Campaign – an
initiative powered by AIESEC aimed to activate the leadership potential
of young people of the world by engaging and mobilizing them through
offering purposeful and cross-cultural projects around the globe that
are designed to impact and contribute to the Sustainable Development
Goals.

Foundation President and National Program Manager recognized by
provincial government for road safety contributions in Gia Lai
21 November, 2018 – Hanoi
The
People's Committee of Gia Lai presented AIP Foundation Founder and
President, Greig Craft, and Vietnam National Program Manager, Phuong
Dinh, an award for AIP Foundation's valuable road safety work in Gia Lai
Province at a conference celebrating foreign NGOs contributions to the
province. AIP Foundation has been promoting road safety in Gia Lai since
2015 through programs such as
Helmets for Kids and
Slow Zone, Safe Zone, which focus on child helmet use and speed
reduction in high risk areas around primary schools in the region. Mr.
Craft and Ms. Dinh lauded the People's Committee of Gia Lai and the
provincial Traffic Safety Committee for their support of child road
safety programs in the province. Mr. Craft also signed a commemorative
document from the People's Committee of Gia Lai to celebrate the work of
the
Slow Zone, Safe Zone project in 2018.

Camhomes support Roadside Community Outreach with donation of helmets to motorcyclists in Preah Sihanouk Province
12 November, 2018 - Preah Sihanouk Province, Cambodia
AIP
Foundation staff partnered with Camhomes representatives to deliver 150
quality helmets to lucky motorcyclists as part of a community outreach
event focusing on road safety in Preah Sihanouk Province. In 2017, road
crashes accounted for 75% of road fatalities in Cambodia, where only 27%
of adult motorcyclists and 8% of child passengers were recorded wearing
a helmet. Additionally, road crashes increased by almost 10% in Preah
Sihanouk Province in 2017, making Preah Sihanouk Province the 12th
highest road crash province in Cambodia.

Min Meanvy, Secretary of State, Ministry of Public Works and Transport
and Secretary General of the National Road Safety Committee and Khuoch
Lengkheang, Camhomes Press Relations and Marketing Strategy Manager
attended the community safety event and advised many drivers and
passengers on the correct way to wear their helmet. Police
representatives also handed out road safety pamphlets, Traffic Law
booklets and stickers to motorcyclists reminding them of their duty to
be a safe road user.
The
generous donation of 150 helmets by Camhomes to the community is a
positive step toward reducing the number of severe head trauma and death
victims by providing quality helmets where they are most needed – in
high risk areas.

Solidarity Center and AIP Foundation team up with trade unions to improve transportation for commuting garment workers
5 November, 2018 – Phnom Penh
Solidarity
Center and AIP Foundation joined forces to assist Cambodian trade
unions with an inaugural foundational workshop on
“Transport Safety for Commuting Garment Workers.” The workshop
was convened to specifically discuss commuting safety for workers and to
encourage the trade unions to consider and play a larger part in
promoting improvements in transportation across the sector. The main
objectives were to: 1) initiate dialogue between the trade unions with a
discussion on their role in keeping workers safe; 2) the impact they
can make; 3) where and with whom they can champion the issue.during
commute to school and travel as motorcycle passengers or as bicyclists.
The
workshop was attended by 50 delegates including representatives from 19
unions including those from 4 of the target factories taking part in
the Garment and Footwear Sector Road Safety strategy and pilot program
being implemented by AIP Foundation. Representatives from the National
Social Security Fund (NSSF), Better Factories Cambodia, GIZ, and USAID
also attended.
The
Solidarity Center is the largest U.S.-based international labor rights
organization helping workers attain safe workplaces, family-supporting
wages, dignity on the job and greater equity at work. The Solidarity
Center assists workers in more than 60 countries as they resist
discrimination, exploitation and the systems that entrench poverty.

Helmets for Families helps protect the children of Preah Sihanouk Province
12 November, 2018 - Preah Sihanouk Province, Cambodia
With the support of Manulife,
Helmets for Families donated more than 1000 helmets to
students, teachers and parents at Hun Sen Krong Primary School in Preah
Sihanouk District. Training workshops were also held for more than 100
parents to promote helmet use.
Helmets for Families is focused on engaging parents - especially mothers - as role models in child helmet use.
Event
attendees included senior representatives from the General Secretariat
of National Road Safety Committee, Deputy Governor of Preah Sihanouk
Province, road safety stakeholders, development partners, private sector
partners, parents, students, staff and administration team of Hun Sen
Krong Primary School, members of the press, Management team and staff of
Manulife Cambodia, and AIP Foundation staff.
Helmets for Families will operate in Preah Sihanouk Province
through 2018 and 2019 academic year. Road deaths have increased by 10%
in the province since 2017, making it the eleventh highest province for
road crashes. AIP Foundation’s goal is to continue increase awareness
about the importance of helmet use for all in Preah Sihanouk Province.

Street Wise recognizes student road safety ambassadors and establishes Road Safety Corner at Thai primary school
1-2 November, 2018- Songkhla Province, Thailand
In order to grow and facilitate capacity building,
Street Wise held a final evaluation stakeholder meeting as well
as a recognition ceremony for student road safety ambassadors. At the
stakeholder meeting on Thursday, 46 participants from the 11 program
schools, Chevron Thailand, AIP Foundation, and the community gathered to
review
Street Wise programming this year and to evaluate its progress.
Songkhla deputy governor Sakra Kapinkan, who chaired the meeting, AIP
Foundation CEO Mirjam Sidik, and government representatives from road
safety-related agencies in the province discussed ways to work together
to raise awareness about the importance of helmet use and further
improve the safety of children and family when using the road. At the
end of the meeting, there was a certificate presentation ceremony for
all the participating schools and partner organizations.
The next day, AIP Foundation organized a road safety ambassador recognition ceremony for the
Street Wise program at Wichianchom School with more than 160
participants including 100 students and representatives from the
government, program schools, AIP Foundation, and Chevron Thailand.
During the ceremony, Mr. Pairoj Jarit-ngam, Deputy Governor of Songkhla,
served as chairman and gave a speech to attendees about the critical
work that they do as road safety ambassadors.
Following
these speeches, road safety ambassador students of the 11 project
schools in Muang and Singhanakhon District led activities where they
shared best practices about road safety for children. Additionally, a
“road safety corner” was unveiled at Wichianchom School as part of
Steet Wise’s goal to make the school a model school for road
safety learning. It will serve as a learning center not only for
students at the school, but for teachers and community members as well.
The corner will display informational videos and road safety
ambassadors’ work including journals, drawings, and other artwork as
well as information boards about correct helmet use and care and
pedestrian safety.

The 7% Project holds training of teachers in Bangkok
24-25 November, 2018- Bangkok
Save the Children and AIP Foundation held a training of teachers (TOT) on school safety awareness as part of
The 7% Project. The trainees included 34 teachers from 8
districts in Bangkok - Prawet, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Wang Thonglang, Min
BuriYannawa, Bang Kapi, Phasi Charoen and Don Mueang - and
representatives from the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC)
and the Bangkok Primary Educational Area District Office.
The
morning session focused on equipping the participants with road safety
basics such as statistics and knowledge of the current situation in
Thailand as well as with relevant legislation. Meanwhile, the activities
in the afternoon were designed to help the participants develop
engaging lesson plans that they can use in their respective schools and
districts.
In
addition to teachers and government officials, three guest speakers
were also in attendance: AIP Foundation's Oratai Junsuwanaruk; Save the
Children’s Child Health & Safety Programmes Coordinator Arun
Wattanapalin; and
Legal Development Program member and Director of Legal
Development and Consulting 2, Legal Affairs Division, the Department of
Disaster Prevention and Mitigation's Pisith Wongthiathana. 80 people
including 68 teachers and government officials attended the two-day
workshop.
AIP
Foundation also accepted a donation of 30,000 Baht on the first day
from TRQ Company Limited’s Assistant Vice President of Product
Development Chanida Hongpananon that supports
The 7% Project.
Save
the Children and AIP Foundation Thailand have partnered with other
organizations with the aim to increase engagement by school authorities
to encourage helmet use among children and families, strengthen the
capacity of BMA staff, teachers, community members, and youth leaders,
and engage police stakeholders to actively enforce traffic laws.
