Global initiatives Policy: #50by30 – road safety NGOs call for road deaths to be halved by 2030 NGOs and global road safety stakeholders have called on governments around the world to commit to saving lives by halving road deaths and injuries in their countries by 2030 and accepting the help of roads safety NGOs to achieve this goal. At the Sixth Global Meeting of Nongovernmental Organizations Advocating for Road Safety and Road Victims, stakeholders from 76 countries met to reflect on their progress and identify actions required to reduce death and injury on the world’s roads. They highlighted the importance of maintaining a clear and ambitious road casualty reduction target and introducing an evidence-based road casualty reduction strategy.

Sustainability Initiative: London sets benchmark for low emissions London’s new Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has set a global benchmark for ambitious air quality initiatives. All cars, vans, taxis and other motorised vehicles that travel through central London must meet the highest emissions standards, or their drivers must pay a daily charge to enter the zone. In operation 24 hours a day, every day of the year, the ULEZ will help reduce exhaust nitrous oxide and particulate emissions, helping to improve air quality and making central London a safer and more pleasant place to live, work and visit. Infrastructure Policy: African road safety NGO wins international development prize The African road safety NGO AMEND has won the first WRI Ross Prize for Cities for its School Area Road Safety Assessments and Improvements (SARSAI) programme. The award recognises the SARSAI programme for its affordable, life-saving and scalable road safety interventions that enable children to travel to school more safely. The project is the first road safety programme of any type proven to reduce road traffic injuries among children in sub-Saharan Africa. Road users Research: Road danger not recognised by tourism industry Road crashes are a leading cause of death for tourists across the world, and tourists may be more at risk on roads than the local population, according to a new report on the importance of road safety for tourists and tourism development in Greece. To raise awareness across the tourism industry, the Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST) has published International Tourism and Road Safety in Greece, with findings based on a national survey of tourists’ perceptions of road safety in Greece. Greece currently has one of the highest road death rates in Europe, with serious road safety problems at many popular tourist destinations. The report recommends a roadmap for stakeholders to follow to address the issue of tourists’ security on the roads. Post crash response Research: Provisional road death figures show EU unlikely to meet road safety targets The European Commission has published preliminary road crash statistics for the EU in 2018. The figures indicate, that despite reductions in the number of deaths and serious injuries on the road, there is much more work to be done. Between 2010 and 2018, road deaths across the EU reduced by 21%. While this is a welcome reduction, it indicates that the EU is highly unlikely to meet its target of reducing road deaths by 50% by 2020. Policy: WHO: Emergency trauma care is vital A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the importance of timely emergency trauma care in the event of acute illness or injury. The report recognises that emergency trauma care is a vital aspect of universal health coverage which significantly improves the long-term public health of a community, reduces the likelihood of medical complications and improves the likelihood of a patient’s survival. WHO recommends an integrated platform for delivery of emergency care that will enable healthcare professionals to offer an immediate and accessible emergency trauma service.
