NTUA – 8th Road Safety and Simulation International Conference, Athens, 8-10 June 2022 The 8th Road Safety & Simulation International Conference 2022 (RSS2022) took place with great success on 08-10 June 2022 at Zappeion Megaron in Athens organized by NTUA and HITE under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the City of Athens. 320 road safety scientists from 28 countries joined this first post-pandemic global road safety in-person major event, to discuss on current and future challenges of Road Safety in the Digital Era. WHO – Road Safety Manual on Drink-Driving, May 2022 The World Health Oganisation (WHO) recently published the revised edition of the Manual on Drink-Driving: A Road Safety Manual for Decision-Makers and Practitioners. The Manual provides guidance for decision-makers and practitioners to reduce the prevalence of drink driving and associated road trauma. It draws on experience from countries that have succeeded in achieving and sustaining reductions in alcohol-related road trauma, and includes recommendations for developing and implementing drink driving legislation, and advice on how to monitor and evaluate progress.

European Commission – Prevention of Driving under the Influence of Alcohol and Drugs Study, February 2022 The European Commission published a Study titled Prevention of Driving under the Influence of Alcohol and Drugs. Among its conclusions, the Study argues in particular that taking steps to mitigate drink driving, such as lower permitted blood alcohol levels or alcohol interlocks, would be particularly relevant for young or novice drivers and for drivers of heavy goods vehicles. However, it also finds that there is a lack of data on drug-driving fatalities and a need to develop more accurate and usable drugs screening devices.

PIARC – Improving Road Tunnel Resilience Report, 2021 The World Road Association – PIARC recently published a Report titled “Improving Road Tunnel Resilience, Considering Safety and Availability – PIARC Literature Review“. This Review focusses on key tunnel topics: a) General concepts and approaches for resilience management, b) Legislation, standards, strategies and policies, c) Criteria and requirements for resilience, availability and safety as a mandatory constraint, d) Various events and future developments to be resilient for (including weather, climate change, natural hazards, traffic incidents, etc.), e) Possible measures to improve road tunnel resilience for these events, f) Organisational and managerial aspects of resilience improvement.

ETSC – 16th Annual Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) Report, June 2022 The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) published the 16th edition of PIN Annual Report , with the active contribution of NTUA, presented at the 2022 ETSC Road Safety Performance Index Award event which took place online with great success on 15 June 2022. The EU27 collectively reduced the number of road deaths by 31% over the period 2011-2021, from 28,865 in 2011 to 19,823 in 2021. There were 57,095 fewer deaths on EU roads over the last decade than there would have been if deaths had continued at the same level as in 2011.

Intertraffic Exhibition, Amsterdam, March 2022 The Intertraffic Exhibition 2022 was held in Amsterdam, on 29 March – 1 April 2022. University of Brescia – 3rd International Conference on Road Safety, June 2022 The Centro Studi Città Amica per la sicurezza nella Mobilità (CESCAM ) of the University of Brescia, organised with great success the 3rd International Conference on Road Safety, that was held in Brescia, on 13 June 2022.  This year the International Conference focused on “Priorities Actions Agenda”, or rather on which criteria to adopt to draw up an agenda of intervention priorities regarding road safety. NTUA actively contributed with the following presentation :  Scientific Research in Road Safety-Big Data and Artificial Intelligence

CEDR – Network-wide Road Safety Assessment Webinar, March 2022 The Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR) organised with great success a Webinar under the theme: Network-wide Road Safety Assessment (Article 5) of RISM II, which was held on 3 March 2022. CEDR WG Road Safety aims to develop and share knowledge among NRAs on the improvement of safety of road infrastructure.   NTUA actively contributed with the following presentation:  Study on a Methodology for Network-wide Road Safety Assessment

Modelling the relationship between covid-19 restrictive measures and mobility patterns across Europe using time-series analysis, May 2022 A paper titled “Modelling the relationship between covid-19 restrictive measures and mobility patterns across Europe using time-series analysis” authored by Marianthi Kallidoni, Christos Katrakazas and George Yannis is published in European Journal of Transport and Infrastructure Research. Data on walking and traffic were exploited and several time series analysis models were developed, in order to estimate mobility during pandemic in 25 EU countries. School closing was found to be the most important exogenous factor for describing driving or walking, while “Stay at home” orders had not a significant effect on the evolution of people movements.

Cost benefit and acceptance analysis of reducing speed limits in Athens to 30km/h, July 2022 An NTUA Diploma Thesis titled “Cost benefit and acceptance analysis of reducing speed limits in Athens to 30km/h” was recently presented by Stella Roussou. This Diploma modeled Athenians preferences on speed limit reduction and performed the respective socio-economic cost benefit analysis (CBA) of the reduction of crashes and respective casualties, the costs incurred due to the increase in travel time and the benefit from reducing fuel consumption and environmental impact (CO2, NOx, PM emissions). The CBA revealed that the 30km/h speed limit is deemed economically highly viable and worth of implementing.

i-DREAMS – 5th Newsletter, June 2022 The Horizon 2020 project i-DREAMS (smart Driver Environment Assesment and Monitoring System) recently released its 5th Newsletter, presenting the main accomplishments of the project, through creative solutions and risk mitigation strategies, exploiting state-of-the art findings on driver safety tolerance zone. The Newsletter presents how to bring i-DREAMS to the market and society, the second successful review meeting and several i-DREAMS dissemination activities.

ITF – 7th IRTAD International Conference, Lyon, September 2022 The International Traffic Safety Data and Analysis Group (IRTAD) of the International Transport Forum (ITF/OECD), the Université Gustave Eiffel, CEREMA, ONISR and ENTPE are co-organising the 7th IRTAD Conference: Better Road Safety Data for Better Safety Outcomes, which will be held in Lyon, on 27 – 28 September 2022. The Conference aims to discuss improvements in the quality of data systems and data analysis in IRTAD and other countries as an essential way to build and monitor strong road safety policies in the Decade 2021-30.

FERSI – Road Safety Conference, Hague, October 2022 The Forum of European Road Safety Research Organisations (FERSI) is organising the 2022 Road Safety Conference which will take place on 6-7 October 2022 in Hague, Netherlands. This highly interesting Conference focuses on the exchange of national and regional experiences and implemented evidence-based road safety measures, both positive and negative ones. There will be a specific focus on the road to successful implementation, including overcoming the barriers encountered along the way.

Baseline – EU Road Safety KPIs Conference, Brussels, October 2022 The European Commission funded Baseline project (Collection of Key Performance Indicators for Road Safety in the EU) organises the Road Safety KPIs Conference which will be held as a hybrid event (in Brussels and online), on 19 October 2022. The results of the extensive data collection and analysis performed in the EU countries will be presented covering all 8 KPIs defined at the EU road safety strategic action plan: Speed, Alcohol, Distraction, Safety belt, Helmet, Vehicle safety, Infrastructure and Post-crash care.

Transport Research Arena (TRA), Lisbon, November 2022 The European Commission and the Agência Nacional de Inovação (ANI) together with the European Transport Research Platforms ACARE, ALICE, CEDR, ECTP, ERRAC, ERTRAC, ETRA and Waterborne, are organising the Transport Research Arena Conference (TRA2022) which will be held in Lisbon, on 14-17 November 2022. The pillars of the Conference will be the scientific excellence, research and innovation challenges, the latest technological and industrial developments and innovative policies regarding the European Transport Research and Innovation and the cooperation of Europe with other continents.  The Master Programme overview for the conference has been published.
