Brochure reviews global launch of Decade
On 11 May 2011, the first ever Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 was launched with great enthusiasm and optimism across the world. Governments, international agencies, civil society organizations and private companies in more than 100 countries celebrated the launch through hundreds of national and local events. A new brochure highlights some of these events from across the globe.

UN Secretary-General releases latest report Improving global road safety
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon released his latest report on road safety. The report provides an account of achievements attained by the global road safety community from October 2009 - August 2011 and concludes with a number of recommendations needed to achieve the Decade goal.

Theme announced for Second UN Global Road Safety Week
In its meeting of November 2011, the UN Road Safety Collaboration decided on the theme of the Second UN Global Road Safety Week to be held in 2013. The theme will be: pedestrian safety. It is anticipated that there will be hundreds of events hosted around the world. Join us in starting to plan an event in your country or community. World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims marked around the world
On this year's World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, dozens of commemorations were held in cities worldwide to show support to victims of road traffic crashes, their families and communities. To read about some of these events, visit www.worlddayofremembrance.org/. Statements from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and others highlighted the importance of this Day.

Applications to the Road Safety Fund opened
Established by WHO and the FIA Foundation, the Road Safety Fund seeks financial contributions from private companies and other sources to support implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade in developing countries. A first set of grants will be issued in 2012, and it is anticipated that 10 - 15 awards of up to US$ 30,000 will be given to government ministries and NGOs. Applications are now open through 31 January 2012.

Terms of reference developed for national Decade focal points
National Decade focal points have been nominated by governments in more than 80 countries. To see if your country has a Decade focal point, visit www.who.int/roadsafety/decade_of_action/focal/en/index.html. If you yourself are a national focal point for the Decade, read the "terms of reference" which give guidance on your role and let us know how we can support you.

Share your national Decade plan
A number of countries around the world have created national plans for the Decade. For us to have a general sense of needs which have been identified and to inspire other countries which are in the process of developing plans, we would like to collect those currently available. If your country has a national plan for the Decade, we invite you to share it with the Decade Secretariat.
Calendar of global and regional road safety events created
Those hosting key global or regional road safety events may complete the form here www.who.int/roadsafety/events/form/en/index.html . The information provided will be placed into a calendar of global and regional events on the Decade web site.
We are in need of photos depicting road safety projects and activities. If your organization would like to share photos to contribute to the production of Decade-related advocacy materials, we invite you to do so through the Decade Flickr web site.
