ALLIANCE TO LAUNCH AFRICA CHAPTER Next month, the Alliance will launch the Africa Chapter of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety at the 1st African Road Safety Forum, in Morocco. The African continent has only 2% of the world’s cars but 20% of the world’s road deaths. Focused attention is needed to improve safety in the region, and NGOs’ voices, best practices, advocacy, and capacity are vital. The Africa Chapter will strengthen the voices of Alliance members in Africa through closer collaboration and targeted action. To tie in with the launch, the Alliance will present a brief for discussion. The brief, which is based on the recent member survey of NGO perspectives on the Decade of Action 2011–2020 and consultation with our member NGOs in the region, will inform the work of the Africa Chapter. HOW A ROLL OF TAPE CAN HELP SAVE LIVES In rural Botswana, donkey-drawn carts are still the main means of transport. Through an Alliance Empowerment Program seed grant, Alliance member the Society of Road Safety Ambassadors (SORSA) launched a program with communities along the busy A1 highway that fixes reflective tape to the carts. In the year since the program began, crashes involving animal-drawn carts on the highway reduced by over 40%. RESOURCES FOR YOUR WORLD DAY OF REMEMBRANCE CAMPAIGN World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) will be held on 18 November 2018. The Alliance is working with WHO to promote key messages aligned to the “Roads have Stories” theme of this year’s event. A series of social media banners and stories will be available next week as part of our WDoR 2018 toolkit HERE. Please share them and help us to amplify the #RoadsHaveStories theme. WDoR is also an opportunity to share local campaigns targeting roads and their stories in your community. The tool kit includes a number of resources to help you develop your local campaign. Don't forget to share your campaigns with us! FEVR is the creator of WDoR. You can read more on the official website HERE and see the video for WDoR 2018 HERE. 20 NEW ADVOCATES FOR ASIA We’re looking forward to the next Alliance Advocate training in Delhi, India. The program, which is part of the Alliance Empowerment Program, has already equipped 49 Advocates to design and implement data-driven advocacy projects in their home countries. Working with FedEx, the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), International Road Assessment Program (iRAP), WHO India, FIA Foundation, and Youth for Road Safety (YOURS), 20 Alliance Advocates from eight countries around Asia, including 11 from eight states in India, will learn data techniques and use them to identify and advocate for improvements to school zones in high-risk areas.  Read more about the program HERE. FLEET MANAGERS FOR ROAD SAFETY The Network of Employers for Road Safety (NETS) met this month in Frisco, Texas, US, for its annual conference. Lotte Brondum, Executive Director of the Alliance, together with Shane O'Connor, Communications Advisor, Road Safety at FedEx, presented a session on road safety sustainability. The session focused on the Alliance's collaboration with FedEx through the Alliance Empowerment Program and the impact that the program has had on NGOs and their communities around the world. It sought to encourage and envision other NETS members to engage and partner with NGOs. Read more HERE. SHOWCASING PILLAR FOUR NGO PROJECTS AT UNRSC Rochelle Sobel, Alliance Board Member and Chair of the Alliance working group for pillar four, presented findings and best practices from our recent call for road-user behavior case studies at the UN Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, this month. The presentation emphasized the importance of basing our work on evidence and showcased the important role that NGOs can play in changing road-user attitudes and behavior. FRANCE COMMITS SUPPORT FOR UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY FUND France has become the first national government to commit financial support to the UN Global Road Safety Fund launched earlier this year. President Emmanuel Macron announced an initial EU€3 million contribution to the fund at a reception in Paris, France, to host the FIA High Level Panel for Road Safety. Read more HERE.
