The 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety has come to an end. Now the real work begins, writes Elvira Zsinkai.
The TISPOL Leadership participated in this high level conference on road safety, which had a big influence of them.
The
Swedish capital city, Stockholm, hosted the minister-led delegations
which representatives from the world of industry and research,
international institutions and organizations. All of the representatives
contributed with knowledge, commitment, joy and an open mind for change
under the two
days that the conference lasted.
After the Conference, TISPOL President Volker Orben said:
"This was a very good initiative from WHO, emphasising that road safety is a health issue also. So three kind of ministries are responsible: Ministries of Transport, Ministries of Health and when it comes to traffic enforcement Ministries of Interior also in some nations.

leadership is needed. Which ministry has the governance? As we know: No
clear governance means no responsibility for (poor) results."
The
number of people who died on the roads in France jumped by almost 10
per cent in January this year compared with January last year, a
contrast to the “historically low” numbers seen in 2019.
Figures published last week by road safety agency la Sécurité Routière show that 260 people died in road collisions in mainland France in 2020 compared with 237 in January last year - a jump of 9.7%.

Traffic
police officers from the County Police Hq in Cracow chased a Fiat
driver who did not stop for a road control. The 25 year-old driver was
over the drink-drive limit.In total, he committed three crimes,
including against the life and health of a policeman. He now faces up to

Last
week, road traffic police officers across the country carried out
control and prevention activities called "SMOG". The main purpose of
the activities was to eliminate vehicles whose technical condition

Officers
from the Guardia Civil arrested a 27 year-old man accused of causing an
accident on the A-44 motorway in Granada, in which one person was
seriously injured, after driving for more than 23 kilometres on the
wrong side of the road under the influence of alcohol.
The driver also tested positive for drugs.
Germany: 22-year-old convicted of

After
an illegal car race with a fatality in Moers in North Rhine-Westphalia,
the regional court in Kleve has sentenced a 22-year-old driver to
murder. He was given a life sentence. A 43-year-old driver, notminvolvd
in the race, had been fatally injured in April 2019 when the
defendant's car crashed into her car.
The
judge followed the demand of the public prosecutor and sentenced the
second defendant, who had driven the other car during the race, to three
years and nine months.
A
survey of more than 18,000 drivers shows that only 16 per cent of them
completely abstain from using their smartphones when at the wheel.
An
Austrian technology firm evaluated the driving behaviour of 18,626 car
drivers in Europe and North America who own a smartphone, and has come
to an alarming conclusion:
