The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (#WDoR)

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (#WDoR) is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year – to remember the many millions killed and injured on the world’s roads, together with their families and many others also affected, as well as reflect on the tremendous burden and cost of this daily continuing disaster.

FEVR is proposing since more than 10 years now the slogan which is related to one of the Pillars of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety: The slogan for this year’s slogan of the World Day "Life is not a car part" relates to Pillar 3 of the Global Decade of Action: Safer vehicles & Mobility. In addition, it accords with the general theme of the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety that will take place in Stockholm in February 2020 – “Achieving Global Goals 2030”.

Road victims established this day:

Brigitte Chaudhry, former FEVR president and founder of RoadPeace (UK), came up with the idea in 1993 which was than supported by all FEVR members. From 1995, Road Victim Advocacy NGOs under the umbrella of FEVR, observed this Day – first as European Day of Remembrance, but soon as World Day when NGOs from South Africa, Argentina and Israel joined.
18. November 2018 we celebrated WDoR 25th Anniversary - 25 years WDoR

Launching the EU Road Safety Exchange Project ETSC

During the ETSC Main Council Meeting our Friends 4 Vision Zero 0by30 In Cities
Brussels, 9th October - FEVR has attended ETSC's event for Road Safety Exchange project.

Twelve EU Member States team up to tackle challenges including speeding, infrastructure safety and improving the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
Twelve EU Member States are joining forces to share smart ideas for improving road safety, as part of a new EU-funded project, launched on 9th October in Brussels.
Although European roads are the safest in the world and although road safety has improved greatly in recent decades, the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads is still far too high. In 2018, there were over 25,000 fatalities in road accidents. While this is a decrease of 21% compared to 2010, it represents only a 1% decrease compared to 2017.

and thx Ireland and RSA CEO Moyagh Murdock & Director Michael Rowland for supporting FEVR campaign: Vision Zero In Cities by 2030
European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc commented: “We have to work together to get to Vision Zero – zero deaths and injuries on our roads by 2050 – and this means twinning and exchange of best practices. The EU Road Safety Exchange project will provide valuable help to initially six EU Member States keen to improve their road safety performance over a three-year period. In combining a high level of political involvement with lasting exchanges between national experts, this project is a unique opportunity to tackle challenges including speeding, infrastructure safety and improving the safety of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.”

Antonio Avenoso, Executive Director of ETSC said: “This project is all about showing how effective road safety policies work in the real world. We will bring together experts so they can help each other figure out how to deliver similar results in their own countries. We’re delighted that so many Member States were keen to get on board, and we can’t wait to see the results.”

Keep little fingers busy with our fun road safety activity sheets, colouring sheets and postcards – send postcards home so children can Step Up for Safe Streets by asking grown ups to help keep them safe near roads.

Posters
Display posters in your school entrance to let people know you're getting involved in Road Safety Week 2019 and raise awareness of how streets should be designed to meet the needs of people, not for traffic.

Get involved!
Take part in a quick survey and tell us about the safety of the streets where you live. We will make sure that the people who make the decisions that matter where you live – about how fast traffic is moving and how much safe space there is for walking and cycling – will hear your views. Brake share the findings from this survey with your local authority to help them understand the views of the people who live, work and play on their streets.
