Stronger together: partnerships for safer roads   Collaboration is one of the Alliance's values, set out in our Strategic Plan 2024–2030. In the run up to the Fourth Ministerial Conference on Road Safety (Ministerial Conference) in Morocco next year, a unified civil society voice continues to be of the utmost importance.   This month, collaboration with iRAP has enhanced the Mobility Snapshot data from our #CommitToAct campaign. Through it, NGOs have received tailored recommendations and cost estimates for pedestrian safety. It showed 80% of the Mobility Snapshots were rated zero-star, but that 83% could be improved to three-star or above by implementing Priority Interventions that are proven to be effective in saving lives. This additional data from iRAP is increasing the strength and credibility of NGOs' advocacy.   We support collaboration among NGOs and with other stakeholders through networking and sharing opportunities. In November, we will hold the First Latin American Regional Meeting of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety in partnership with Fundación Aleatica, bringing together NGOs and regional partners ahead of the Ministerial Conference.    Collaboration enables us to amplify voices from the ground. NGOs and other partners working in local contexts are well placed to present the realities people around the world are facing and offer solutions. At our pre-conference walk-shop at Safety 2024 in India, we will gather these insights as inputs for a white paper on availability of safe and affordable helmets. As a participating agency for the UN Road Safety Fund, we are also seeking proposals for partnerships toward implementation of laws or standards on motorcycle helmets in Asia.  If you represent an NGO working in road safety that isn’t yet part of the Alliance, find out how to join us and become part of a worldwide network advocating together to save lives HERE.    Read more HERE. 2024 Mobility Snapshot in Bayanzurh district main roundabout, Mongolia Next steps for Mobility Snapshots 51 Star Rating Mobility Snapshots from our 2024 #CommittoAct campaign have now been analyzed through our collaboration with iRAP. 41 of the assessed intersections (80%) were rated as zero-star for pedestrians and only one achieved a three-star rating. Three-star is the minimum-recommended, globally-recognized standard. For each star-rated Mobility Snapshot, iRAP generated a customized list of recommendations with indicative costings, starting with the Alliance Priority Interventions, to increase the star-rating and reduce the risk rating for the intersections. If the recommended Priority Interventions, such as 30 km/h zones, lower speeds, traffic calming, and pedestrian facilities were implemented, 19 intersections (37%) would achieve three stars and 24 would achieve four or five stars (47%). The remaining eight intersections would require additional interventions to attain a three-star rating. For instance, the intersection at Bayanzurh district main roundabout in Mongolia (shown above) with no star rating, could achieve a four-star rating if recommended interventions such as footpaths, traffic calming, reduced speeds, and road signs are implemented. Bellview Square, Cuttack, India Featured Mobility Snapshot: Cuttack, India Bellview Square intersection, in Cuttack, India, currently has a zero-star rating but could become a five-star intersection if recommended evidence-based measures, such as clear footpaths, pedestrian crossings, traffic calming, 30 km/h, and road signs are implemented. Implementing these interventions is estimated to cost around US$85,000, based on Star Rating indicative data. At the intersection, blocked footpaths and lack of traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, and traffic calming measures force the pedestrians that use this intersection onto the main road. This jeopardizes their safety on a daily basis. Forum for Prevention of Road Accidents, who performed this snapshot, will use these findings to advocate for the implementation of evidence-based interventions.  “While passing through Bellview Square in Cuttack, I often find myself navigating a challenging and risky environment. This area lacks basic pedestrian facilities and traffic moves at a faster pace. The situation is dire, with numerous incidents of injuries and fatalities reported. I urge the authorities to take immediate action to improve the safety of this intersection for pedestrians,” says Lipsa Mohapatra, Forum for Prevention of Road Accidents. © Pixabay Funding opportunity for Asia  On 1 September 2024, the UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) will open a call for proposals, offering a significant opportunity to advance road safety initiatives in low- and middle-income countries. This opportunity is accessible through pre-approved participating agencies, comprising various UN bodies and select NGOs, including the Alliance, that have gone through a detailed vetting process. As a participating agency, the Alliance can submit proposals directly to the UNRSF in collaboration with NGOs and partners who do not need to be participating agencies themselves. Applications of interest to the Alliance must be aligned to our Strategic Plan and should focus on the implementation of laws or standards on motorcycle helmets in Asia. These are some of the questions we will explore at our interactive walk-shop (Safe helmets for all: checking the realities) on Sunday 1 September at 09:00, in Delhi, India, as part of the pre-conference program for Safety 2024.
