Editorial: From Mobility Snapshots to safe streets Over the past year, Mobility Snapshots have been a mainstay of our advocacy at the Alliance. They expose unsafe streets that endanger road users daily and pinpoint the evidence‑based interventions needed to make them safe. They equip NGOs with the data they need for targeted advocacy with decision‑makers. These efforts are already driving real change around the world. This edition of our newsletter highlights some recent successes. In Chișinău, Moldova, Mobility Snapshots have helped transform an unsafe intersection to one where 90% of users now report feeling safe. In several cities in Tanzania, pedestrian facilities and other interventions are being installed, improving safety for people who walk and cycle. Meanwhile in Kampala, Uganda, a 30 km/h zone, pedestrian crossings, and footpaths have been implemented at a busy, yet unsafe, intersection. These successes prove that data‑driven advocacy works. By continuing to gather data and advocating for Priority Interventions, NGOs are supporting the transformation of unsafe intersections into safe streets for all.

Residents report feeling safer in Moldova “The ACM intersection on Academiei Street posed constant danger to people who use it daily. The busy intersection had a speed limit of 50 km/h and no crossings for pedestrians. All that has changed with the Mobility Snapshot data helping us to highlight the issues and demonstrate that simple, locally implemented solutions based on evidence and citizens’ demand can save lives and transform the urban environment for everyone.” — Tatiana Mihailova, Automobile Club of Moldova.   Following advocacy by ACM using its Mobility Snapshot, local authorities in Chișinău, Moldova, have implemented evidence-based interventions at the intersection of Hîncești Highway and Academiei Street in Chișinău. Previously, this busy intersection had a speed limit of 50 km/h, lacked safe crossings and traffic signals, and cars parked on both sides of the road, making it difficult for pedestrians to cross. Now, the speed limit has been reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h, lanes have been narrowed and curbs adjusted to slow vehicle traffic, and pedestrian crossings have been installed.   According to a community survey conducted by ACM after the interventions were implemented, 90% of local residents said the changes had a positive impact and significantly improved their safety as pedestrians.  Read more.

Implementation in multiple cities in Tanzania “By using Mobility Snapshot data, we highlighted the real dangers people face at Wajenzi [intersection] and showed decision-makers exactly where to act. Evidence‑driven advocacy like this transforms unsafe intersections into protected spaces for all of us.” — Ramadhani Msangi, Road Safety Ambassadors Tanzania (RSA Tanzania). Alliance member RSA Tanzania’s advocacy with the Tanzania National Roads Agency and Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency has led to upgrades at several intersections across the country. In Dar es Salaam, pedestrian crossings have been installed at the Bunju intersection on Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo Road; in Dodoma, traffic lights have been installed at Wajenzi intersection on Arusha Road and Waziri Mkuu Road; and in Bagamoyo, the intersection near Ali Hassan Mwinyi School is expected to be marked as a 30 km/h zone. Prior to RSA Tanzania’s advocacy, these intersections were unsafe for the schoolchildren and other pedestrians and cyclists using them daily. For example, Wajenzi intersection is used by 1,080 pedestrians and 130 cyclists during peak hour, yet the posted speed limit is 50 km/h and vehicles routinely travel above it. The new traffic lights will help to manage the speed of traffic and make it easier for pedestrians to cross.   As well as engaging decision-makers, RSA Tanzania mobilized media and community groups to amplify their advocacy. Busy intersection upgraded in Kampala “Thanks to the new footpaths, crossings, and a safer speed limit, parents can walk their children to school without fear, and market vendors can cross the road with confidence. By using Mobility Snapshot data, we pinpointed the exact dangers at the intersection and presented clear evidence to decision‑makers.” — Fred Tumwine, Uganda Road Accident Reduction Network Organization (URRENO). In Kampala City, Uganda, Mobility Snapshot advocacy by Alliance member URRENO has led authorities to designate the busy Kampala Road intersection with Burton and Johnston Streets as a 30 km/h safety zone, and installed footpaths and signalized pedestrian crossings. These interventions now offer better protection to the 5,520 pedestrians who pass through this intersection daily. URRЕNO, alongside other members of the Road Safety Advocacy Coalition Uganda, continue their coordinated advocacy for similar, evidence‑based upgrades at other high‑risk intersections in Kampala.
