ALLIANCE 2022 ANNUAL REPORT
We are delighted to share our 2022 Annual Report with you. 

In 2022, we, together with our member NGOs, defined regional and global calls to action that honed in on three specific asks that governments must urgently address to achieve a 50% reduction in road deaths and injuries by 2030: evidence-based actions, including 30 km/h zones where people walk, live, and play; investment in road safety; and involving NGOs in road safety decision-making. 

The Annual Report shows how these calls to action underpinned our activities throughout 2022, through our Seventh Global Meeting of Nongovernmental Organizations Advocating for Road Safety and Road Victims in Budapest, Hungary, in March, the #CommitToAct campaign in May, analysis of the political declaration and the Member State statements at the High-level Meeting on Global Road Safety (HLM) in July, and the anniversary of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030 (Global Plan) in October.

ANNUAL REPORT: MEMBERS IN ACTION   The Annual Report highlights examples from our members around the world, showing how NGOs are using global opportunities and Alliance offerings to support reduction of road deaths and injuries through advocacy in their countries. South Africa (page 19): South Africans Against Drunk Driving used the #CommitToAct campaign to build on a previous commitment for 30 km/h zones. Read more HERE. Ecuador (page 21): Fundación CAVAT used last year’s HLM to engage with the government on the launch of the new road safety strategy. Read more HERE. Tunisia (page 24): Ambassadeurs de la Sécurité Routière implemented the LEARN project in Tunisia, supporting implementation of a new digital road safety collection tool. Read more HERE. Iran (page 27): Road Safety Pioneers took part in the Alliance Incubator program. Through the NGO’s project pedestrian safety was improved and injuries reduced. Read more HERE.

MEANINGFUL PARTICIPATION GUIDE IN FRENCH AND SPANISH The Good Practice Guide on Meaningful NGO Participation in the Field of Road Safety has now been translated into French and Spanish, expanding its reach and impact. First published in September 2021, the guide demonstrates the unique and essential value of including NGOs in road safety policymaking and implementation. The guide is a practical resource for NGOs and other civil society advocates, describing steps that they can take to position themselves more effectively with their governments and to get their voices included in decision making. Making the guide available in French and Spanish enables its content to be read in depth by more people and responds to requests from NGOs to produce more resources in French and Spanish. Our thanks to Nourredine Sayadi and member NGO Les Ambassadeurs de la Sécurité Routière  for translating the guide into French and sharing the translation with us. WHAT IS THE SDG SUMMIT?  According to a preliminary assessment of around 140 SDG targets, only 12% were estimated to be on track.   In September, the UN General Assembly will hold an SDG Summit in at the UN Headquarters in New York. The Summit marks the mid-point of the Sustainable Development Agenda and will be a review of countries’ progress towards the 2030 targets.  Read more about what the Summit means and its relevance for road safety NGOs HERE.

FOURTH MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE ANNOUNCED The Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety will be held in Marrakech, Morocco, on 18–19 February 2025. The conference will assess the progress made in implementing the Global Plan in the first half of the Decade of Action and push toward the 2030 targets.  In 2020, the Third Ministerial Conference in Stockholm, Sweden, marked a significant shift toward a more integrated approach to road safety. The Alliance, representing civil society, played an important role. We were part of the steering committee, Lotte Brondum, our Executive Director, spoke at the closing session, and several of our member NGOs were speakers on panels. Most notably, we held the People’s Exhibition, where a pile of shoes representing the number of lives lost to road crashes each day was a key image from the conference. The People’s Meeting, held at the exhibition on the eve of the conference was a civil society call to action to Ministers attending the conference (pictured above). Alongside the exhibition, we launched our report, The Day Our World Crumbled: the Human Cost of Inaction on Road Safety based on the experiences of 5,606 survey respondents around the world.
