The European Court of Auditors has published a special Report titled ‘Reaching EU Road Safety Objectives – Time to move up a gear’, which provides an in-depth examination of the current state of play and trends in road safety in the EU. The
text highlights the importance of investing on high-quality, resilient,
and sustainable road infrastructure, and the related road safety
planning obligations, as well as of interconnectivity and
interoperability of data related to traffic to improve road safety
management.   |

The World Bank Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) has published a Knowledge Report titled Estimating the Disability Burden of Road Traffic Injuries. This Report provides valuable insights into the prevalence, causes, and long-term impacts
of crash-related disabilities. By broadening the discussion beyond
fatalities to the often-overlooked issue of disability, the report paves
the way for a more holistic perspective on road safety impacts, which
can inform more effective road safety policies.  |

Together for Safer Roads Global Coalition published a Report titled Seat Belt Safety Standard Operating Procedures, which aims at helping fleet managers increase seat belt usage rates, a fundamental and critical aspect of an overall road safety system. This
Report is part of a larger, far-reaching Global Fleet Safety
Instruments Standardization Initiative and contains six chapters,
including training for Seat Belt Compliance, Seat Belt Software and
Hardware Selection, Purchasing and Evaluating Vehicle Seat Belt Safety
Systems, Seat Belt Utilization Enforcement, Communication for Seat Belt
Safety Awareness and Documentation of Seat Belt Safety Compliance. |

|
The International Road Federation (IRF) released the 61th edition of the IRF World Road Statistics 2024 (WRS2024), with data now open to all for free through the IRF WRS Data Warehouse platform, thanks to the generous support of the TotalEnergies Foundation and Michelin Corporate Foundation.
The IRF WRS 2024 continues to be the major comprehensive, universal
source of statistical data on road networks, traffic and inland
transport, including traffic crashes. This year the WRS 2024 includes
the latest data covering years 2017 to 2022, with the active
contribution of NTUA
for the Greek data. It includes over 200 road and transport-sector
related indicators across 11 sections, covering more than 200 countries
and territories.  |

The Moped Riders & Motorcyclists Thematic Report of the European Survey of Road Users’ Safety Attitudes (ESRA) has been published with the active contribution of NTUA, containing a
wealth of information on road safety in 39 countries across Europe,
America and Asia-Oceania, based on the ESRA3 survey. This Thematic ESRA3
Report describes the frequency of riding a moped or a motorcycle, the
use of infrastructure, the road crash involvement, the acceptability of
unsafe traffic behaviour, the safety perception of using moped and
motorcycle, the rates of self-declared behaviour and factors associated with risky riding behaviours. Furthermore, it includes comparisons among the participating countries as well as results in relation to age and gender. |

NTUA Professor George Yannis has been awarded an Honorary Distinction during the Environmental Awards 2024, organised by Boussias events, held on 30 September 2024 in Athens. Professor George Yannis was awarded for his campaign promoting city-wide 30km/h speed limits in as many cities as possible worldwide, as a key policy for safer, healthier and greener cities, through his challenge of 30 Marathons in 30 months. These
unique Awards highlight and reward good practices and initiatives for
environmental protection and sustainability, as well as innovative
"green" projects, technologies or programmes. |

ERTICO and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) co-organised with great success the 30th ITS World Congress which was held in Dubai, on 16-20 September 2024, under the theme: “Mobility Driven by ITS”. ITS
World Congress is the forum to make meaningful connections, experience
inventive conference program presented by industry experts, and see
cutting-edge technology in the Exhibit Hall. ITS World Congress allows
the smart mobility community to come together to explore the deployment
of intelligent transportation technologies that saves lives, improves
mobility, promotes sustainability, and increases efficiency and
productivity. NTUA actively contributed with the following presentations:

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and the Unipolis Foundation organised with great success in the framework of the European Mobility Week, the City Flows 2024 event which was held in Trento, Italy, on 20 September 2024. This year's hybrid event with theme “Shared public space”
focused on the promotion of a space in which people, different
transportation modes and activities should contribute to social equity,
road safety, pollution reduction and improved quality of life. NTUA Professor George Yannis actively contributed with the following presentation:

A paper titled “Unfolding the dynamics of driving behavior: a machine learning analysis from Germany and Belgium” authored by Stella Roussou, Eva Michelaraki, Christos Katrakazas, Amir Pooyan Afghari, Christelle Al Haddad, Md Rakibul Alam, Constantinos Antoniou, Eleonora Papadimitriou, Tom Brijs and George Yannis has been published in European Transport Research Review. Thirty
German drivers’ trips and Forty-Three Belgian drivers were analyzed
using Long-Short-Term-Memory Networks and shallow Neural Networks,
revealing factors contributing to risky behavior. Results indicate i-DREAMS interventions significantly enhance driving behavior, with Neural Networks displaying superior performance among the algorithms considered.  |

An NTUA Diploma Thesis titled “Spatial analysis of road crashes in the municipalities of Greece” was recently presented by Dimitris Andreikos. To
achieve this, population, social, economic and transportation data were
collected, and its influence on the number of road fatalities were
examined. The application and evaluation of the models showed that the
most important factors that influence the number of road fatalities are
the possession of private vehicles and the Gross Domestic Product. Private
vehicle possession correlates positively with the number of road
fatalities, as the increase in vehicles leads to an increased exposure
to danger, while GDP correlates negatively, as its increase is linked to
better life quality and improved road safety measures.  |

This conference with theme "Connecting to Empower Mobility: Roads as
Enablers of a Sustainable Future for All" will serve as a platform for
global leaders, industry experts, academia, and diverse public and
private stakeholders to engage in insightful discussions and
collaborative efforts, addressing pivotal issues and exploring
innovations within the road and mobility sectors. Registrations are

The International Cooperation on Theories and Concepts in Traffic safety (ICTCT) together with the Traffic and Transportation Safety Lab of Delft University of Technology are organising the 36th Conference which will be held in The Hague, Netherlands, on 17-18 October 2024.
This conference with theme “Inclusive and interdisciplinary road safety
research” will serve as a platform for global leaders, industry
experts, academia and diverse public and private stakeholders to engage
in insightful discussions and collaborative efforts. Particular emphasis
will be given to vulnerable road users, micromobility, road
infrastructure design, innovative research methodologies and inclusive

The 9th Road Safety & Simulation International Conference 2024 (RSS2024) hosted by the Kentucky Transportation Center will take place in Lexington, Kentucky, on 28-31 October 2024, under the theme “Improving Decisions Through Safety and Simulation Tools”. The Conference aims to
improve upon the existing knowledge in the area of road safety and
contribute to reducing the number of crash fatalities and injuries
occurring worldwide, through the dissemination of innovative research

POLIS, the European Cities Network, is organising the 2024 Annual Polis Conference, which will take place in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, on 27-28 November 2024. The POLIS Annual Conference is Europe’s leading sustainable urban mobility event, providing an opportunity for cities and regions to showcase their transport achievements,
including recent safety developments, to a large audience of mobility
experts, practitioners, and decision-makers from both the public and
private sector. Urban Road Safety is a key conference priority.
