GLOBAL ALLIANCE OF NGOs FOR ROAD SAFETY  Newsletter | 28 December 2018 Dear Friends, The publication of the Global Status Report on Road Safety 2018 this month revealed a disappointing lack of progress toward reducing road injuries and fatalities. This is a wake-up call to ignite political will and action. More than 3,700 people die on the world’s roads every day. In the year ahead, we must track the road safety commitments that have been made and push for concrete action from our governments in the lead-up to the Third Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, to be held in Sweden in 2020. HAPPY NEW YEAR: 2018 HIGHLIGHTS The launch of the Africa Chapter of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, 20 new Alliance members, 42 new Alliance Advocates in Asia and Africa, the UN Road Safety Trust Fund, campaigns, and more: It has been a busy year for the Alliance and its members. May 2019 be a year of breakthroughs for us all.   GLOBAL STATUS REPORT ON ROAD SAFETY 2018 This month, World Health Organization (WHO) published the Global Status Report on Road Safety 2018. The report shows that road deaths globally have increased to 1.35 million per year and efforts toward the 2020 goal to reduce road deaths by 50% by 2020 have been insufficient. While road deaths have decreased in 48 countries since the last Global Status Report in 2015, they have increased in 104 countries and no low-income country has reduced road deaths. GLOBAL MEETING PHOTO AND POSTER EXHIBITIONS The Sixth Global Meeting of Nongovernmental Organizations Advocating for Road Safety and Road Victims (the Global Meeting) is getting closer! The theme of the Global Meeting is “From Global Commitment to Local Action," reflecting on the role of the Alliance and NGOs to bridge the gap between the UN road safety targets and action needed on the ground. You can see the updated program, including workshops, HERE. Alliance members have the opportunity to submit a poster of their work and photos for exhibitions that will demonstrate what they do at the front line of road safety. Members can also now sign up for one-day training sessions on behavior change campaigning and an introduction to assessment of safety around schools. Find out more and sign up HERE. It’s not too late to register for the Global Meeting. Remember to sign up before 15 January 2019 when the price will increase. ALLIANCE MEMBERS WIN PRINCE MICHAEL AWARD  Every year, the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards highlight outstanding examples of international road safety initiatives. The Alliance was a recipient last year for the Empowerment Program. This year, two Alliance members received the prestigious award: Amend and Road Safety Kyrgyzstan. Other recipients included the Institute for Road Traffic Education (IRTE), which hosted the Alliance Advocate training last month; the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), co-hosts of the Fifth Global Meeting; and iRAP, for their Star Rating for Schools project that Alliance members piloted. MY STREET CAMPAIGN GATHERING FORCE The next phase of Child Health Initiative’s “This Is My Street” campaign kicked off in India this month at the fifth annual Raahgiri Day in Gurugram, India. The campaign calls for global leaders to prioritize the rights of young people to safe and healthy streets. Read more about the event, the campaign, and how to get involved HERE. REVIEW OF INDIA'S GOOD SAMARITAN LAW Two years ago, India’s Good Samaritan law, protecting those who help crash victims, came into force through a Supreme Court ruling. Alliance member SaveLIFE Foundation, which brought the case to the Supreme Court, has published a report analyzing the implementation of the law. The report found that, although 88% of bystanders would now be generally willing to help road victims (up from 29% in 2013), still only 29% would escort a victim to a hospital, and only 28% would call an ambulance, with many citing fear of harassment as a major reason. Of those who had assisted victims, 59% said that they were detained by police despite the new law. Read more HERE.
