Press Release13th November 2019
World Day of
Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims
Sunday, 17th November 2019 (3rd Sunday of November)
Every third Sunday of November since 1993, the European Federation of
Road Traffic Victims (FEVR) commemorates the tragic deaths and suffering on the
world’s roads. The World Day of Remembrance was introduced in response to road
victims’ deep need for public recognition and acknowledgement of their loss and
suffering and to offer them an opportunity to share their emotions with fellow
bereaved and injured the world over.
“Life is not a
car part”
The theme for this year’s commemoration of the World Day of Remembrance
relates to Pillar 3 of the Global Decade of Action: Safer vehicles. In
addition, it accords with the general theme of the 3rd Global Ministerial
Conference on Road Safety that will take place in Stockholm in February 2020 –
“Achieving Global Goals 2030”.
The simple truth is that motorized vehicles are dangerous machines, not
only due to their internal and external design but also due to the pollution
they cause. Hence, recognising that twice as many people are fatally victimised
by exhaust fumes and brake &tire micro- residues as are from road crashes,
is an essential step to take decisive action and change the present paradigm of
road mobility. Our right to life – and to health – is doubly put into question
every day on the world’s roads and streets. It is thus urgent to admit the
short- sightedness of the present models of road safety, which don’t
incorporate measures to tackle pollution fatalities, as only then can we
confront the complex reality of this pandemic and do justice to the memory of
all victims.
Jeannot Mersch, FEVR
president:
“As the World Day of Remembrance is a Road Victims Day, the decision
makers and actors behind this should always be Road Traffic Victims, and this in
good and fair collaboration with all other Road Safety stakeholders around the
world.”
Brigitte Chaudhry, past FEVR president and World Day champion from its
origin:
“We, road victim advocates, cannot accept that our passionate and
dedicated work over many decades, towards ending the needless killing and
maiming on the world’s roads, has not even resulted in a reduction during the
Decade of Action 2011-2020!
Violeta
Bulc, European Commissioner for Transport
„These days should not only be a tribute but also a reminder to all of
us to do more. Much more to prevent these tragedies as road users policy
makers, road safety advocates… Special mention on this day goes to the European
Federation of Road Traffic Victims. You are the pillar support for the victims
and their families advocating passionately their rights and calling for safer
roads. This support is essential for all affected by tragedy. “
Most of our recommendations
in the Brussels NGO Declaration* for that Decade have yet to be acted upon and
NGOs are urged to demand that this will happen during the next Decade 2020-2030.
We need to become even stronger and make it clear to all stakeholders that the
only acceptable target to road victim NGOs is NO road deaths – Let´s start with
Vision Zero In Cities by 2030 to finally reach Vision Zero everywhere in
2050 #0by30 https://fevr.org/0by30/
