Sustainability Campaign for solar-powered truck promotes renewable energy in Tajikistan Residents of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, have launched an ambitious project to promote the use of renewable energy in the capital city. The Dushanbe Solar City campaign is raising funds to install solar panels on the city’s first electric vehicle – a food truck that will deliver locally produced, fresh and healthy snacks. The crowdfunding venture is supported by local and international partners and is a great example of citizens, businesses and governments working together to tackle climate change. The Niagara Active School Travel programme sees transport services and public health organisations working with schools to incorporate physical activity into children’s lives. Post-crash response Helicopter rescue highlights importance of post-crash care Neuquén province of Argentina has highlighted the need for immediate post-crash care in the region. It takes 20-30 minutes for a helicopter to reach the nearest hospital in the Neuquén area, while the same journey by ambulance can take an hour and a half – considerably longer than the hour recommended by experts to increase the likelihood of surviving a road crash. The demonstration was hosted by road safety NGO Bien Argentino and attended by key policy-makers from the region. Read more Research: Transaid funds post-crash care research in Uganda Transaid has announced funding for a pilot project to strengthen emergency post-crash care in Uganda. The project, developed by the Makerere University, promotes safe, effective and affordable emergency care systems to reduce road death and injury. It includes training police to deliver emergency first aid if they are first on the scene after a crash. Uganda has one of the highest road death rates in the world, with an estimated 29 deaths per 100,000 population every year. Read more Raising awareness YouTube channel puts road safety back on political agenda in Armenia The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) in Armenia has launched a YouTube channel dedicated to road safety. RStv is updated regularly with news on road safety issues in Armenia and elsewhere, and aims to put road safety back on the political agenda. NRSC hopes that growing levels of public and political support will inspire stakeholders to take action to reduce road deaths and injuries in Armenia as the country’s latest national road safety strategy expired in 2015.
