NGO credibility and accountability NGOs can bring the greatest value to the 2030 SDG targets when they are able to influence and participate meaningfully in government decision making on behalf of the communities they serve. NGO credibility is one of the seven elements for successful NGO engagement with government identified in our Good Practice Guide to Meaningful NGO Participation in the Field of Road Safety. Strong, transparent governance underpins this and demonstrates accountability. NGOs’ role is to keep governments accountable. To be credible in that role, we must ourselves act accountably. We are accountable to our donors, supporters, and volunteers, to use their support effectively. We are accountable to our partners, both government and civil society, to advocate with data and evidence. We are accountable to the communities we serve, to represent them and demand actions that will reduce road deaths and injuries.  Building credibility and accountability is a continuous process. Our Strategic Plan 2024-2030: From Global Commitments to Local Implementation published in December 2023, sets out how the Alliance will strengthen our governance and oversight. It is accompanied by the recommendations of a governance review conducted in 2022 and 2023. These documents have refined how we conducted our General Assembly 2024, held this month, and informed amendments to our bylaws, which were presented to members and approved at the General Assembly. The Alliance's General Assembly 2019 in Chania, Greece General Assembly elects new Board Members “Good governance stands at the very heart of road safety efforts. At the Alliance, it ensures transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness, essential for fostering trust and collaboration among our global partners. As I step down from the Alliance Board, I'm reminded that our shared commitment to good governance is what propels us toward achieving our vision of a world where roads no longer pose a threat to human life,” says Prerana Arora, retiring Alliance Board Member and Founder and CEO, People's Trust Jaipur, India. This month, we held the General Assembly 2024 of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety. The General Assembly is an important part of the Alliance's governance and accountability to its members. In the two years since the General Assembly 2022, we have grown our member base by 10 percent, launched a new regional chapter in Latin America, published our new strategic plan, and developed the Accountability Toolkit to empower NGOs to hold their governments accountable for the safety of all road users. These activities are helping us to be a leading global voice for our NGOs, and strengthening and supporting our members in global and local advocacy. During the General Assembly 2024, we ratified the proposed changes to the Alliance bylaws, presented and approved the audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers; presented our biennial report and accounts; discharged the existing board; and elected new Board Members. Our sincere gratitude goes to our outgoing Board Members, Prerana Arora and Kulanthayan Mani, Founder, Safe Kids Malaysia, who have made invaluable contributions to the governance and growth of the Alliance. We also thank all our members who are at the heart of all we do at the Alliance. We would not be able to perform our role without their continued support.  We are delighted to announce two new Board Members, elected at the General Assembly 2024. Find out more about the General Assembly HERE.  Alliance members in Nigeria during the 2022 #CommitToAct campaign Take part in the Mobility Snapshots Will you join our global movement to challenge how our streets are designed and for who? From 20–26 May, our #CommitToAct campaign will mobilize advocates to get out onto their streets and collect Mobility Snapshot data to show the reality of people’s daily journeys. Workshop on the development of the National Road Safety Strategy in Malawi © Road Safety Alert Foundation Member Story: 30 km/h advocacy in Malawi According to the Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023, road traffic fatalities in Malawi increased from 18 per 100,000 population in 2018 to 20 per 100,000 population in 2023. While the country has legislation on speed limits, the urban speed limit is 50 km/h. Alliance member Road Safety Alert Foundation (ROSAF) in Malawi is celebrating a milestone toward implementation of 30 km/h zones, which have recently been included in Malawi's National Road Safety Strategy. ROSAF's advocacy for 30 km/h zones began with its advocacy to ensure Malawi's representation at the 2022 UN High-Level Meeting on Global Road Safety, followed up with engagement with the Minister of Transport and extensive media campaigns.  The inclusion of 30 km/h zones in Malawi's National Road Safety Strategy marks a critical step toward enhancing the safety of pedestrians and all road users in Malawi. With the strategy now in place, ROSAF’s focus shifts to pushing for its implementation through further engagements with key stakeholders including the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services, the Ministry of Health, Malawi Police Traffic Department, and city councils.  According to Joel Jere, Founder and Executive Director of ROSAF, “The next step will be advocating for allocation of resources in the national budget toward implementation of the 30 km/h policy. Partnership to drive accountability We recently announced a new partnership to support seven NGOs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, to advocate for 30km/h streets, supported by the FIA Foundation. The NGOs will use the Alliance Accountability Toolkit to pilot advocacy projects with a view to learning from their experiences and replicating their findings in other settings. The Accountability Toolkit is a set of practical tools that empowers NGOs to hold their governments accountable for the safety of all road users. This is key to reducing road deaths and injuries, contributing to SDG 3.6 and the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, and making our world safer, cleaner, more livable, more equitable, and more sustainable. The selected NGOs will focus on implementing 30 km/h zones because they are well-proven to reduce occurrences and severity of road crashes, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. Their experiences and results can be replicated, offering a practical guide for NGOs in different countries and settings.  “30 km/h limits help achieve the ambitious targets of the United Nations’ Global Goals in the area of road traffic injury by saving lives and making cities safer and more livable,” said Aggie Krasnolucka, Programmes Director, FIA Foundation.
