phones up on road journeys
phones up on road journeys
A
police operation in the Netherlands saw officers issue 154 fines, of
which a disturbing 114 were for mobile phone offences. The action
supported research from the country's Institute for Road Safety Research
(SWOV) showing that an average of 63.8 per cent of drivers will pick up
their phone while driving. However, for drivers aged 25 to 34 years the
figure is 79 per cent.
Pictured
above is police officer Frank Driessen, who was operating in an
unmarked BMW. Frank dealt with a woman driving a Tesla at 150km/h on the
A1 near Baarn. She was also texting with her smartphone in her right
hand. Frank stopped her and issued a
fine of nearly €250 for using the phone, as well as a fine for speeding.
Colleagues were also positioned in a police camper van to gain a good view into cars and to identify offences.
Save the date... ICADTS Conference in Portugal, June 2020
We
are excited to be part of a major European conference on alcohol and
drug safety in traffic. The event will be in the Portuguese city of
Coimbra from 28 to 30 June, and is organised by the International
Council on Alcohol and Drugs in Traffic Safety (ICADTS).
As
we all know, alcohol and drugs and traffic safety are a central concern
of multiple organisations and experts worldwide and throughout Europe.
Representatives will meet in Coimbra at the beginning of a new decade
and during three days at the end of June 2020. This will be an event
where we will share knowledge from around the world on all alcohol and
drug related issues in
mobility.
The
year 2020 is of great importance as the beginning of the new decade
where the whole world should turn attention to changes needed urgently
in various quarters and sectors. At the same time, policies related to
alcohol consumption and the consequent harmful effects related to
mobility and safety are part of the agenda of the day, both nationally
and internationally. For this reason, Portugal will be the stage for
several world organisations to come together to share information and
come to agreement on issues and priorities.

Cyprus: young people meet for lecture
on alcohol risks
on alcohol risks
Young
people from several countries gathered in Paralimni, near Famagusta, to
hear a lecture given on driving under the influence of alcohol. The
lecture was offered by the Cyprus Police late last month, within the
framework of an International Conference, under the programme "Erasmus
Plus".
The
participants are working in the sector of youth and come from European
and other countries. In some of these countries, the highest
consumption of alcohol has been observed, based on official statistics.
Another
lecture is going to be offered at the same place, by the Cyprus Police,
on 17 March, in the framework of the same programme. Its subject matter
will be "Road Safety Consciousness".
Belgium: roads policing in focus

work. The Belgian Federal Highway Police has started to use this
innovative tool to carry out faster, more accurate and more complete

field.
Croatia: feeding the vines offers a good excuse for spreading road safety messages
“Vincekovo”
in Croatia is a folk-custom of blessing vineyards when in January the
vineyards are “fed” with to homemade sausages and other meat products
and watered with wine so they can produce well. Since increased alcohol
consumption is linked to this folk custom, Police Directorat
Koprivnica-Križevci conducted the preventive action “Safe Vincekovo” on a
Friday in January to prevent traffic accidents caused by drink drivers.
