LOOKING TOWARD THE NEW YEAR AND NEW DECADE
It is the beginning of a new year and the new Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030. We have ambitious targets to achieve.
We asked a selection of Alliance members from around the world about their hopes and expectations for road safety for the new year and new decade. Common themes were government leadership, political will and the central role of a national road safety agency.
COLLABORATION FOR ACCOUNTABILITY IN EUROPE
In September 2019, the Europe Commission, on behalf of Member States, presented a commitment to the Alliance to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030. The target is supported by action plans endorsed in October 2020 and managed by Transport Community.
Earlier this week, Alliance members in Europe joined a Q&A session with Matej Zakonjšek and Liljana Çela of Transport Community to discuss ways to collaborate and keep European governments accountable for progress toward the commitment. Read the proposed outcomes and listen to the recording HERE.
GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY PARTNERSHIP FUNDING
The Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) has announced a call for proposals for the 18th round of its Road Safety Grants Programme. It will accept applications for national-level advocacy for road user policy reform or implementation in Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Uganda, Ukraine, and Vietnam, and national-level vehicle safety regulations reform or vehicle safety regulations implementation in Colombia and Mexico.

The Alliance currently has 256 members in 93 countries around the world. One of our strengths as an NGO movement is the breadth and diversity of our members. As the new Decade of Action for Road Safety begins, we are preparing a range of global and regional capacity building, networking and sharing, and advocacy opportunities to strengthen our members' work and amplify our joint voices.

- Argentina: Federación Iberoamericana de Víctimas Contra la Violencia Vial (FICVI) works across Latin America and Spain. Héctor D'Agostini, talks about a pilot scheme with the national agency in Argentina to support victims that he hopes will be rolled out in other countries, as well as advocacy for speed and vehicle safety. - Ireland: the national road safety strategy for the next 10 years will be launched in March, including the 2030 target and Safe System approach. Donna Price, International Road Victims' Association, discusses advocacy for speed and data. Read more HERE.
- Lebanon: In Lebanon, political upheaval, financial collapse, and the COVID-19 pandemic, make it difficult to keep road safety on the priority list. A new president has been elected but has yet to form a government. Lena Gebrane, Kunhadi, talks about operating in difficult times. Read more HERE.
- Malaysia: Safe Kids Malaysia are focusing on implementation of a new child restraint law. Kulanthayan Mani talks about his hopes that the new legislation will improve the safety culture for all road users and lead to further child safety measures. Read more HERE.
- Senegal: LASER International has been advocating for a national mandate for 30 km/h limits around schools since 2012. The law is ready, and Ndèye Awa Sarr hopes that it, along with the appointment of the national road safety agency, will be implemented in 2021. Read more HERE.
- Thailand: Ratanawadee Winther of AIP Foundation, Thailand, talks about advocating to strengthen the national road safety agency and building coalitions to advocate more strongly. Read more HERE.
SPEED MANAGEMENT: PREPARING FOR ADVOCACY
Speed management, and particularly the need for 30km/h in urban areas
where people and vehicles mix, will be a key advocacy theme in 2021. It
is a specific focus in the Stockholm Declaration and UN Resolution and
the theme of the UN Global Road Safety Week. To prepare NGOs, the
Alliance is partnering with the World Resources Institute (WRI) to
deliver training to build NGOs' knowledge of the Safe Systems approach
and fast-track their capacity for planning and executing targeted
advocacy on speed management.
