ALLIANCE PUBLICATION: WALKING THE TALK October saw the launch of our new action brief, Walking the Talk, which describes the response of the Alliance and its member NGOs to the road safety SDGs. It presents stories about Alliance members growing in strength and confidence. It demonstrates how investment in capacity building through the Alliance Empowerment Program has made their work more effective. We are proud of our members and of the Empowerment Program’s role in enabling NGOs to save lives on the road. We will be releasing more training and webinars through the program in coming months, thus enabling a greater number of NGOs to take advantage of our capacity-building activities. We invite you to walk the talk with us as we work together to reduce road casualties through evidence-based programs and partnerships. You can download the publication HERE.   EVERY JOURNEY, EVERY CHILD CONFERENCE This month, the Every Journey, Every Child conference took place in London, UK. It featured Zoleka Mandela, Global Ambassador for the Child Health Initiative; Jean Todt, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety; and the mayors of London and Accra, Ghana. Lotte Brondum, Executive Director of the Alliance launched our new action brief, Walking the Talk. Participants at the conference signed the Declaration of Every Child’s Right to Safe & Healthy Streets, which comprises six articles focused on protecting children from traffic-related toxic air pollution and road traffic injury. The conference was attended by a number of Alliance members (see photo above), who supported the Alliance in launching Walking the Talk. Read more about the conference and the Declaration HERE. WORLD DAY OF REMEMBRANCE: NEW TOOLKIT COMING SOON The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) is an important global event for the road safety community. It is a time to reflect on those injured and lost on our roads. It is also a time to scale up action to prevent these deaths and injuries and draw attention to the target of halving the number of deaths by 2020. At the Alliance, we want to support the WDoR team at FEVR  in making this the biggest event yet and raising global awareness of the unacceptable human cost of road traffic crashes. We have made it our goal to reach 500,000 people through social media and we need your help. The Alliance is producing a toolkit to help you promote WDoR and your event. It will include social media posts, template press releases, an advocacy guide, and a signboard to download. The toolkit will be available soon. Read more about WDoR on the official website HERE. FUNDACIÓN CAVAT: WHY WE COMMEMORATE THE WORLD DAY OF REMEMBRANCE We asked Esteban Paredes of Alliance member Fundación CAVAT “Nicole Paredes,” Ecuador, why WDoR is important to him and what Fundación CAVAT has learned from running successful WDoR events over the past six years.   “Our foundation commemorates WDoR because we consider it an important day to transmit the message that each one of us could be a victim, but also each one of us could be part of the solution,” says Esteban. Each year, the NGO gathers victims, their families, and government officials outside the government palace in Quito, Ecuador, to read a manifesto that is also read in 15 other Latin American countries. “[The manifesto] expresses that road safety needs to be taken seriously in our country and also [that we must] provide comprehensive assistance to victims.” Fundación CAVAT has learned that some events work better than others. Says Esteban: “In 2016, we did a campaign in the park that included artists and TV presenters, with the intention of raising awareness about road traffic crashes and their victims. Unfortunately, we noticed that the event was more like a concert, and it did not reflect the feelings and awareness and the impact and change we wanted to generate.” He reflects that other events have been more effective: “In 2015, we launched an awareness and prevention campaign named ‘Faces beyond Statistics,’ allowing the public to visualize the problem and raise awareness about it.” Read the full interview HERE. MEMBER FEATURE: STOP-LINE CAMPAIGN IN LEBANON In 2016, Alliance member Kunhadi, Lebanon, received an Alliance seed grant for an awareness campaign, “Stop before the white lines.” The aim of the campaign was to convince drivers not to stop on pedestrian crossings. It used a short, animated TV spot, broadcast at high volume locations in Beirut, to raise awareness and change driver behavior. Before viewing, 36.6% of people could correctly answer questions about behavior on the white pedestrian lines. After viewing, this rose to 79.9%.  One year later, the campaign has made an impact. “Now it's a lot more common to see cars stopping before the white lines on red lights, albeit not nearly as many as they should,” says May Abdouny of Kunhadi, “but at least the culture is launched. Here is a picture [see above] where cars are stopping before the white lines, without the presence of a policeman or other enforcement. That is a sight you couldn’t see previously.” The project was chosen for an Alliance seed grant because it is a good way to disseminate awareness to a large audience and is easy for other NGOs in different countries to replicate. Evidence and impact are key themes of the Alliance Empowerment Program, which includes the seed program. NEW REPORT SHOWS ROAD FATALITIES INCREASING This month, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released the 2017 edition of the International Traffic Safety Data and Analysis Group (IRTAD) annual road safety report. This year’s report shows a 3.3% increase in road fatalities in 2015 compared to 2014, although overall fatalities were still down 6.5% when compared to 2010. The report calls for greater innovation, stating that “the slow-down of progress in countries that achieved notable successes during the previous decades and can boast some of the lowest fatality rates worldwide may also point to the limits of current safety measures and the need for further innovation in road safety policies.” The IRTAD 2017 report provides an overview of road safety performance for 2015 in 40 countries, with preliminary data for 2016 and detailed reports for each country.
